Dordogne
The Dordogne with its landscape of green hills, is particularly known for its castles, such as Monbazillac, Beynac-et-Cazenac and Castelnaud-la-Chapelle. The specialties also enjoy an excellent reputation; They are prepared with local produce: strawberries, nuts, porcini mushrooms, truffles, foie gras deThivier, liqueurs, not to mention cheeses like Trappe d'Échourgnac, le Saint-Clément, le Cabécou du Périgord ou le Rondelé Noix de Dordogne, and the 13 AOC Bergerac wines – which you can taste and enjoy on cozy terraces in village streets or in the numerous restaurants in the area.
Visit also the market of Perigueux and the medieval center of the city. In summer, many festivals are organised here. Discover also the medieval center of Sarlat-la-Caneda, with its cathedral, its palaces, art and antique shops and theater festival in the summer. Nearby you can visit the villages of Vitrac and Beynac-et-Cazenac, which have received the award of "one of the most beautiful villages in France". Monpazier, St-Jean-de-Cole, St-Léon-sur-Vézère, St-Amand-de-Coly, Limeuil and Belvès are also worth visiting. Don’t forget to visit the fortified town of Issigeac and the renovated center of Terrasson-Lavilledieu, through which flows the Vézère River.
Journey Through Time and Nature:
In the Dordogne, you can visit many prehistoric caves such as Pech-Merle, Tourtoirac, Domme or Lascaux. In the National Museum of Prehistory in Les Eyzies-de-Tayac, you can see bisons of over 15,000 years old. At Montignac, near the Vézère River, you can admire the timbered houses and near Bergerac, don’t miss the old paper mill: the Moulin de Larroque. Brantôme, also known as the Venice of the Perigord, gives access to the regional park Périgord-Limousin with its valleys, limestone plateaus, rivers, forests of chestnut trees, orchids and a great variety of birds. The scenery around Lalinde, Louyre et Aillac-Carsac-Aillac is great for cycling enthusiasts. But the Dordogne also offers riding, canoeing, golf and swimming in the rivers with sandy beaches, the lakes, indoor and outdoor pools and water parks.
