A holiday home in the countryside in department Eure
Painter Claude Monet was fascinated by this region with its forests, hills, orchards, hedges and rivers. Allow yourself to be enchanted like him by the sloping landscape in Haute-Normandie region with churches, watermills, castles and abbeys.
Culture around your holiday home
Stroll through towns with half-timbered houses such as Gisors, Breteuil, Nonancourt, Vernon and Le Bec-Hellouin, one of the prettiest villages in France. Visit the old laundry building in Pont-Audemer, the tanners’ workshops and the Mascarets festival in summer. One of Europe’s most beautiful beech forest is in Lyons-la-Forêt, the town where Maurice Ravel lived, and it has also an old covered market hall. Bernay has a municipal museum with a large historical art-collection. Visit the house and garden of Monet with its green bridges and the famous ponds with waterlilies.
Holidaying amidst castles
Château-Gaillard near the town of Les Adelys, built by King Richard the Lionheart, gives a wonderful view of the meandering Seine. Château de Verneuil is located near the town with the same name, which has alleys, avenues lined by linden trees, a flower garden and donjon. Visit the castle at Pacy-sur-Eure which belonged to the Bonaparte family. The domaine at Harcourt has an exceptional arboretum with over 500 species of trees.
Walking, cycling and canoeing on the Eure River
From your gite you can take walks, go horse riding and mountain biking in the green region of Vexin Normand and regional nature park Boucles de la Seine Normande. In Broglie lies an old railroad track which has been made into a ‘voie verte’. Cycling can also be done in Neuilly and Anet. When you are canoeing and kayaking in the Eure valley, you pass the former mill of writer Marcel Pagnol and Autheuil-Authouillet where Yves Montand and Simone Signoret lived. Along the lake of Poses it is good bird watching. Do you like playing golf? Neubourg has an excellent golf court. Fishing for rainbow trout is possible in Beaumont-le Roger.
Shopping on French markets
Le Neuburg has one of the most important markets in Normandy and it is the perfect place to buy specialties such as foie gras, pommeau (apple drink) and mirliton biscuits. Other lovely markets can be found in Bourg-Archard and the department capital Evreux.
