Corsica, also called “island of beauty”, is a mountainous island in the Mediterranean Sea. You can get there by airplane, but you can also take the ferry from Nice or Livorno. The trip takes about 3 hours. The island has miles of beaches, cliffs, mountains, vast plateaus, many forests, lakes and rivers. Because it is sparsely populated, Corsica is a home to wild areas with vegetation of cork oaks, chestnut trees, olive trees, pines and shrubs. As far as the fauna is concerned, there are wild sheep, wild boars, birds of prey as well as seabirds and many fish.
Activities
The island offers countless opportunities for hikers, but especially for athletes, who can practice climbing, rafting, mountain biking or canoeing. All these activities can be practiced especially in the Gorges of Restonica, in the Gorges du Prunelli and the mountains of Alta Roca. You can also browse some of the great hikes (Tra Mare e Moni and GR20) which begin in Calenzana. Discover the Scandola peninsula, Porto Bay, the red creeks Creeks of Piana or the peaks of Monte Cinto and Monte Rotondo. If you prefer to enjoy the beautiful Corsican landscape without getting tired, you can take the train from Corte to Vizzavona. You will discover beautiful beaches and pretty fishing villages such as Propriano, St-Florent and Palombaggia near Porto-Vecchio.
If you want to go diving, we recommend a stay on the Cerbicales Islands or Santa Manza Bay near the citadel of Boniface. Filitosa, Sartène and Calvi are particularly popular cities if you are keen on history. Here they serve French cuisine but also Italian, such as pasta Niolo (goat cheese), sausages, oysters, Corsican bouillabaisse and grilled fish, not to mention the wild boar. For dessert, take the Fiadone, made with cheese and accompanied by Broccio canistrellis of migliaccioles or fritellis, chestnut donuts Castagniccia. You should also taste the beer Pietra, made of chestnuts, or the Cap Corse aperitif, or liquor made out of chestnut or lemon.
