Toulon, at the Mediterranean coast, was once defended by Napoleon and now the main naval port of France, has the oldest maritime museum of the world. From Mons, known for the Roman aqueduct hewn in the rocks, you have a beautiful view of the town and as far a Italy.
Active holiday in Var
Near Hyères is the peninsula Giens with its rock coast, pine forest, creeks and beaches. Activities such as kitesurfing, windsurfing, scuba diving are possible here. Or take a boat to Ile de Porqeurolles and discover the island on a rented bike. Another island of the Iles d’Hyères which has good beaches and is wonderful for walking is Port-Cros. It has 16th century forts and an underwater path for snorkelers. The mimosa forest around medieval village Mormes-les-Mimosas makes a trip around this area certainly worthwhile and in February the traditional Mimosa Parade takes place.
Rugged nature can be found in Gorges du Verdon. This is the largest gorge in Europe and great for kayaking. Lac de Sainte-Croix can be a final destination and is ideal for boating, sailing and paddle boating. In regional nature park Verdon lies the picturesque village Aups where you can climb, walk, go rafting, gliding and canyoning.
Artists in Saint-Tropez
Harbour town Saint-Tropez has been a favourite spot for artist since the 19th century, and in Musée de l’Annonciade you can admire their work. Continue your tour of the peninsula and visit old towns like Ramatuelle, Gassin, Grimaud en Port-Grimaud, ‘ the Venice of France’ . You pass several wineries, the origins of the AOC Côtes-de-Provence. This is how wine has been made in Bandol for centuries. Other lively seaside resorts in Var are Le Lavandou, Sainte-Maxime, Six-Fours-les-Plages, Les Issambres en Sanary-sur-Mer. More inland are Draguignan, Fayence, Tourtour and medieval market towns Brignoles, Lorgues and Roquebrune-sur-Argens with its annual honey festival.
