Boating and cycling in Yonne
Through the hilly patchwork landscape with vineyards the rivers Yonne, Serein and Cousin and the Nivernais and Burgundy Canals run. A lovely area for boating, but also for walking and cycling from your holiday home. You will pass several medieval towns with many religious buildings. For instance the fortified town of Avallon with the Saint Lazare church. On the River Armançon lies Tonnerre. A nice excursion during your stay: visit here the former laundry building Fosse Dionne, the Eglise St-Pierre and the former hospital Hôtel-Dieu. Many old buildings can be found in Joigny, Vaux, Saint-Florentin and Villeneuve-sur-Yonne.
The capital Auxerre
Make sure to visit the capital Auxerre with 15th-century tower with clockwork, abbey church Saint Germain and the Saint Etienne cathedral. Also in Sens a large cathedral and a 19th century market place, both in Art Nouveau style. In Treigny they are building castle Guédelon with medieval techniques and materials. Do you like visiting castles during your holiday? There is a lovely restored 17th century castle in Saint-Saveur-en-Puisaye. You can visit Musée Colette here which is dedicated to the writer who was born in this town.
Most beautiful villages in France
Flowery Noyers-sur-Serein with fortification walls, half-timbered houses and souvenir shops is one of the most beautiful villages of France, like Vézelay with the Sainte-Madeleine church.
You come across pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela here. Saint-Fargeau is worth visiting for its castle which is entered via a drawbridge and where you can see the big towers and beautiful roof structures. In Ancy-le-Franc visit the most important classical Renaissance castle in France. Kayaking and canoeing is possible for example in, Saint-Père-sous-Vezelay through the Vallée de la Cure in Morvan.
Chablis, snails and cheese puffs
Around Chablis, you can taste the white wine or buy it and enjoy it in your holiday-home in Yonne. There is an annual festival around cheese puffs Gougère in Flogny-la-Chapelle and for those who love snails there is the escargots festival in Bassou.
