The rivers also runs through department capitol Never which has interesting sights such as Palace Ducal, Eglise Saint-Etienne and Saint-Cyr-et-Sainte-Julitte cathedral.

Walking and watersports in Nièvre

From this point you can take a tour on an old gabarre transport ship. Through locks and tunnels you also pass the Morvan, a wonderful nature near your holiday home and a great area for walking, cycling, horse riding and fishing on the Lac de Pannecière.
On Lac des Settons you can sail, windsurf and kayak during your holiday. From here lumber would flow to Paris via Clamecy harbour as wooden rafts. Admire the half timbered houses, Église Saint-Martin and the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire Romain-Rolland dedicated to the writer and nobel prize winner.
Museum in Nièvre
If you want to find out about coal mining in this region you can visit the museum in La Machine. Walk through Saint-Honoré-les-Bains, where Julius Caesar discovered
hot springs, along beautiful villas. The Musée Auguste Grasset in Varzy has a special collection of Egyptian sarcophagi, and is located along the route to Santiago de Compostela. Mont Beuvray has been inhabited since the Neolithicum and the bronze age. Through scientific excavations the old street network and the old walls and gate are being restored.
