This department in the Centre region has France’s largest national forest, and you can enjoy the vast forests of Solonge with its pine scent, chestnuts and oaks. Loiret is also rich in water. The river of the same name flows through the agricultural area of Beauce and from west to east through the department runs the Loire River.
Towns and villages near your holiday home in Loiret
From your gite you are very close to medieval towns such as Meung-sur-Loire, Beaugency en Gien, known for its earthenware. Voltaire lived and worked in Sully-sur-Loire castle. Montarigis, with its canals and bridges, is also known as the Venice of Gâtinais. Visit the Fleury abbey in Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire. Worth visiting is also the Roman spa which was excavated near Sceaux-du-Gâtinais. The most important town is Orléans, known for Jeanne d’Arc of course. Visit the cathedral and discover the Musée des Beaux-Arts with works from Gauguin, Picasso and Ruysdael.
Walking from your holiday home
Near your holiday letting you can take several pleasant walking routes. From Vieilles-Maisons-sur-Joudry you can walk along the Orléans canal with thee locks. From Chapelle-Saint-Mesmin you can start a walk with beautiful panoramic views over the river and nature reserve. Along the walking route from Fay-aux-Loges are signs with information about the fens. Gustave Eiffels designed the long canal bridge of Briare, which can be seen from the path along the canal. The forests around Orléans and in Solonge are excellent for cycling.
Parks and castle gardens
The Loire castles are also known for their beautiful gardens. Fragrant roses and herbs can be enjoyed at the castle in Chilleurs-aux-Bois. In June you can admire the flowering rhododendrons at the castle in Châteauneuf-sur-Loire. The source of the Loiret, Bouillon, originates in Parc Floral de la Source. The park at Olivet with its special flowers and plants has received the Jardin Remarquable certification.
Delicacies on French markets
Enjoy the atmosphere and local products on the market in Yèvre-le-Châtel which is built against a rock. Delicious are the honey, macarons, pralines, wine vinegar, Pithiviers almond cake, eau de vie and Coteaux-du-Giennois wine from the Loire valley.
