Visit these special spots by the cliffs in Normandy
Fancy enjoying the coast for a few days, but fed up with the Dutch beaches and dunes? About a 7-hour drive from here is Normandy, a French region with impressive beaches and cliffs. This nature is a nice change from what we have in the Netherlands. Plus point: you can visit the French coast all year round. Not just for sun, sea and beach, but also to learn more about French cuisine, culture and history!
Walk over and along cliffs at Étretat
Want to go to France to see the cliffs in Normandy? Then visit the chalk cliffs that tower into the sky near the village of Étretat. The cliffs at Étretat are the most famous sight on the Normandy coast. A walk along these cliffs shows their height and the contrast of colours with the sea. Of course, you can also walk on top of the cliffs. There you will discover the beautiful nature and the great view of the ocean. The most famous part of these cliffs in Normandy is Manneporte, a point-shaped piece of rock rising from the water. Right next to it is L'Aiguille, in which many people see the shape of an elephant.
Dive into history on invasion beaches
If you are interested in World War II, you can see and learn a lot of things at the cliffs in Normandy. The Allies invaded several beaches in this region on D-Day (6 June 1944) to liberate France from German occupation. The consequences can still be seen today: there are bunkers and cannons, several museums with information about the landing beaches, and you can visit an American Cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer. Near the dunes, where the cemetery is located, you will also find Omaha Beach. That was in the code name for one of the beaches where the Allies landed in World War II.
Soak up culture in the seaside resort of Dieppe
If you love culture and good food, stop in Dieppe during your holiday at the cliffs in France. This is a charming, old seaside resort on the coast of Normandy, where you can unwind. You can check out a fishing port, visit a castle and enjoy French cuisine. Dieppe is an important place for France, as they fish for the scallop there. It is therefore on every menu in this town! Feel like getting a breath of fresh air? Right outside the town you can walk on beaches and along cliffs.
Are you salivating, feel like diving into history, or just want to hike in a beautiful area? Grab your gear and head to Normandy!
