The house
Mas de Mahystre is a charming country house (Maison de Maitre) situated only 20 minutes from the Roman city of Nimes and 35 minutes from the vibrant city of Montpellier. The house was originally a hunting lodge for the lords in Calvisson but after 200 years was expanded to become the manor house for a large wine producer and notable Nimes merchant.
Today it's a great house for a large family get together, a couple of families, a group of friends or even a secluded retreat from the world.
Delightfully, typically French, Mas de Mahystre has high ceilings throughout and the downstairs rooms flow together thanks to high, open archways, old tiles and beams. The well-equipped, large kitchen over looks the pool garden, whilst the main sitting room has a gorgeous fireplace opening onto the large hall and sweeping stone staircase. The den provides a cosy space to watch a film or read and the main dining room opens onto the covered terrace for fabulous outside dining.
Upstairs has two bathrooms with stunning views over the pool and surrounding fields and vineyards, whilst the five bedrooms are all spacious and light with plenty of cupboard space and garden views. Every room in the house has large windows which gives an airy, enchanting feel to the house.
Luxury quality sheets, towels and even pool towels are provided and your beds will be made for your arrival.
You will adore the spaciousness and originality of the house which is surrounded by an enchanting garden, with a delightful private pool, large traditional BBQ, boule pitch, lovely covered terrace and the treehouse is a perfect spot for soaking up the views.
It is a wonderful, uncluttered house to relax, unwind and have fun.

Reviews
Eliza from Mechelen,
We rented the house with family and we had a wonderful time. The house is well located and has a very nice outdoor area. Thanks for having us.
Karin from Oud-Turnhout,
What a charming house to stay for your holidays! We have spent there a week, together with our kids and our little grandson, and it was fantastic! We have enjoyed the meals together on the terrace, relaxing by the pool, taking time to have an aperitif,….just enjoying life! And Mas de Mahystre is a perfect place to do so!
N & M from Paris,
We rented with friends, totalling 4 adults and 4 kids aged 12 to 18. The house is spacious, very comfortable, and well-furnished. Outdoor areas (dining area, pool, garden) are very pleasant. The house is sufficiently secluded while close to several villages offering various amenities. Nîmes and its Roman past is very close and it is easy to spend a day or a half-day on unspoiled Mediterranean beaches. For wine amateurs, there are a number of wineries in the area. It is also easy to rent bikes and enjoy the dedicated path or the nearby hills. We had a fantastic stay and thoroughly enjoyed it.

We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay!
Restaurants, food & wine
The pretty, traditional village of St. Comes has a little bar/shop which is only a 5 minute walk away. The bigger village of Clarensac is a 20 minute walk or a two minute drive and Calvisson is a 5 minute drive away. Both of these villages have lovely boulangeries, fruit and vegetable shops, bars etc. Calvisson has some lovely restaurants and a truly charming market on Sunday mornings, not to be missed. There is a great supermarket, Intermarche, in Caveirac which is only a 10 minute drive.
You will love the local markets and night markets, most notably in Calvisson, Sommiere and Uzes.
Activities
Coast/Beach:
The beautiful beaches of the Mediterranean Sea near Montpellier and the Camargue are only a 35 minute drive away. The glamourous beach restaurants near La Grande Motte are really worth a visit if you want to treat yourselves or equally you can just find a spot on the sand and enjoy the view. If you want wildlife, head to the Camargue for pink flamingos, white horses and black bulls.
Rivers/Countryside
It's a perfect spot for cycling and walking with plenty of trails through the vines and cycles paths. You will be spoilt for choice if you like river swimming or river canoeing with plenty of places near by such as Sommieres or the Pond du Gard. Horse riding is also popular and there's a riding school in the nearby hamlet of Maruejols a few kilometres from St Come.
Mountains
The foothills of the Cevennes are only a 40 minute drive away and offer lots more opportunities for walking, cycling and canoeing.

Further remarks
We fell in love with Mas de Mahystre because of the beauty and originality of the house, as well as the country side location. Private yet not too remote, the historic city of Nimes and the vibrant city of Montpellier are so close, not to mention the stunning Mediterranean beaches and the Cevennes. We are the only English family in the village and we love the traditional French way of life. We feel very lucky to have discovered a special, unspoiled corner of the south of France which is easily accessible by plane, train or car.
