The house

  • Quiet, rural area with some traffic

This charming and spacious property with private pool sleeps 8 and offers secure parking for up to 4 cars in private grounds with automatic gates. Originally built as a stone barn and sympathetically converted and extended, it offers a mix of traditional and modern living spaces.
Outside areas offer a variety of both sunny and shaded spaces to eat, relax or play with two extensive covered patios making it perfect for multiple families or groups of different ages to comfortably share. A beautiful mosaic dining table seats 12, with an outdoor cooking area (stone and Webber kettle BBQs) safely set alongside a secluded pool that has a jacuzzi end and night lighting. There is also an additional covered lounge area next to the pool for shade lovers.
The main living room and open-plan kitchen are bright and modern with full glass walls on two sides that open to let the evening breeze in, and have electric shutters to keep them cool in the heat of the day. The kitchen is equipped with dishwasher, oven, microwave, fridge and wine fridge, coffee machine, etc. and almost everything even the most passionate cook could wish for.
A second cosy sitting room with feature fireplace and wood burner offers an escape from the heat as it is fully shaded by a canopy running almost the full length of building and has thick, exposed stone walls. This room leads on to an office equipped with printer and monitor should you need to work during your stay (Wi-Fi included), as well as a downstairs toilet and shower room that can be accessed from the pool area.
Four bedrooms (three double and one twin, all with fans and shutters) are individually styled, with the two main rooms offering fantastic views over the valley. Consideration has been given to the needs of younger children with a TV, extensive selection of DVDs, Xbox and video games in a first floor TV/games area suitable for the safe entertainment of early risers and those seeking an escape from the sun at the height of the afternoon. Board games and books can be found in the second sitting room, with a full sized table tennis table on the front patio (separate from the pool area).
There is a family shower room with toilet and a second toilet on the first floor, as well as the shower room with toilet on the ground floor.

The property is on the edge of one of France’s most beautiful natural parks, the Cevennes, in an elevated position at the very edge of the town of Sainte Ambroix. It is not overlooked since it is bounded by a disused train line, and has unbroken views along the river Cèze and across a wooded valley to the hills beyond yet it is only minutes from supermarkets and the full facilities of the historic, thriving medieval market town with many cafés and restaurants. Teenagers and adults will be equally delighted that it is just five minutes’ walk down to a beautiful river beach and friendly bistro that cannot be seen or heard from the property!
Within 5 minutes drive of the property (towards Saint Ambroix) you will find 2 large supermarkets Intermarché and Carrefour), hardware store, home/clothing store, boulangerie.
Sainte Ambroix market has been held on a Tuesday morning for the last 650 years, with artisan food producers having stalls in the small squares by both churches
There is a large market with a wide variety of food and craft stalls at Barjac every Friday morning and a vast market in the medieval town of Uzès every Saturday.

Restaurants, food & wine

Sainte Ambroix is a historic county town with a thriving weekly market that attracts a wide range of artisan growers and producers and so visitors from across the region. It has recovered well from the lockdown of recent years with long established bistros and restaurants reopening and a new cocktail bar and gallery recently opening. Le Banque at the centre of town next to the old church offers relaxed family dining in a beautiful walled garden and on the outskirts of town the Close des Arts provides a stylish, yet very reasonable dining experience ideal for more adult parties. Within half an hour C2 in Barjac and Le Vieux Clocher are highly recommended, with Le Care des Saveurs perfect for significant celebrations.

Activities

Saint Ambroix is in the upper valley of the Cèze; located at the eastern edge of the Cevennes only 30 minutes southwest of the Ardèche Gorges and the unmissable Vallon Pont d’Arc. Ideally located for exploring the “villages de caractère” such as Lussan and its potteries, antiques market in Barjac or the historic market town of Uzès, the property is also around an hour and a quarter drive from three world heritage sites; Pont du Gard, the amphitheater at Orange, the Palais de Pape at Avignon.
For sports enthusiasts there are water and rope adventures in the Cèze, the Chassezac or the Barrage de Villefort, plus numerous climbing and mountaineering, walking, hiking, and cycling routes.
