The house
Maison de Laura is a traditional long farmhouse built in 1876 and is south facing. The barn was once used to store and make wine but has since been converted into a gîte The gîte is 80 sq mts over two floors. Air conditioned. Upstairs there is a double bedroom with built in wardrobe and views to the swimming pool. The second bedroom has two adult sized twin beds and a built in wardrobe. The luxury bathroom has a large wet room, heated towel rail and fresh towels supplied. Downstairs there is a lounge/dining area with pellet stove, table and chairs and two sofas. The fitted kitchen is fully equipped with washing machine, dish washer, microwave, full size cooker, ceramic hob and good size fridge with freezer. Outside the gîte there is a private terraced area with table, chairs and a barbeque area. There is a good sized swimming pool which is south facing so gets plenty of sun.

Maison de Laura is situated in a valley surrounded by vineyards in the village of Salsigne 20 minutes north of Carcassonne in the foothills of the Montagne Noir. The village has a local shop selling most items including fresh bread and croissants. There is also a post office and a wine cave. The area is steeped in history and there are many places to see and visit. From Maison de Laura you are within walking distance of the Cathar Castles of Lastours, with it’s Son et Lumiere spectaculars. A short drive away are the Grotto de Limousis and the amazing underground safari of the Gouffre Geant de Cabrespine (a gorge inside a mountain deep enough to hold the Eiffel Tower), The Cascade de Cupservies (the longest drop waterfall in Europe), not to mention - wonderful vineyards, great French restaurants and amazing scenery. It is ideal for walking holidays as we are in the heart of the countryside.

Hartelijk ontvangen. Ruime gite zag er keurig (zoals op foto’s) uit en was schoon. Queensize-bed is niet echt geschikt voor lange mensen. Parkeren kan op het terrein. Buitenruimte is royaal en compleet ingericht. De groene tuin met zwembad is goed onderhouden.

We hebben een heerlijke week gehad in deze fijne gite, die alles biedt wat je nodig hebt. Een goede uitvalsbasis voor bezoekjes aan Carcassonne, Narbonne, en wandelingen in de Montagne Noire. Pauline en Wal zijn erg vriendelijk en kunnen van alles vertellen over het huis en de omgeving.

De gites is zeer compleet en perfect onderhouden, met een zeer goed uitgeruste keuken en een prachtige badkamer. De eigenaren zijn zeer vriendelijk en behulpzaam. Een echte aanrader als je deze prachtige streek wilt bezoeken.

Restaurants, food & wine
There are several good restaurants in the area and the one at Lastours ”Le Puits du Tresor” has a Michelin star. Conques sur Orbiel has a superb restaurant and pizzeria.
There are many fine and reasonably priced restaurants in and around Carcassonne and in the walled city itself. We are in the well known wine region of Minervois with plenty of caves to visit locally.
Activities
You can swim in our pool directly opposite your gîte, or the next village offers you a public swimming pool . There are two lakes both with beaches, one in the nearby Montagnes Noir and one is near Carcassonne. This one has boating facilities and both have life guards in attendance. The Canal du Midi offers boat trips and you can walk or cycle along the canal. In Carcassonne on a Saturday there is a market selling local produce and often there is live music which all adds to the atmosphere.

Further remarks
We are 30 minutes from the historical walled city of Carcassonne, 1 hour to the Mediterranean Sea, 2 hours to the Pyrenees Mountains, 1.15 hours to Toulouse 1.30 to Albi and 15 min. to the Black Mountains. We are situated right in the heart of the Cathar country.
