The house

  • Quiet, rural area with some agricultural activity

L'OLIVIER is a luxurious country house, recently restored and wonderfully spacious with over 200 sq. metres; 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms on two floors. L'Olivier features both a fireplace and a wood-burning stove. Central heating (only needed for the winter months). The large infinity pool (7x15 meters) is shared with two other smaller gîtes; there are 3 separate lounging areas for a maximum occupancy of 15 guests. We count 8 guests for L'Olivier plus a maximum total of 7 for the two smaller houses. We provide a disinfected and clean living environment and since the property is large (8.5 acres), there is plenty of space and privacy.
Ground Floor :
Living/dining room (50 sq. metres) features a cavernous fireplace as well as a wood-burning stove. Satellite TV and DVD player. The stone walls were restored in the original way (‘pierres apparantes’). Comfortable seating, outdoor furniture and a Weber barbecue.
Glass-enclosed veranda provides a view of the woods and can be used as a playroom for children, a quiet retreat or a home office.
Independent large country kitchen fully equipped with dishwasher, microwave, hob, oven and a fridge/freezer, Nespresso and Senseo machines. A selection of fresh kitchen herbs is growing right by the kitchen door.
Ground floor bedroom with queen-size bed (160×200) and antique wardrobe - and a lovely view of the woods.
Modern bathroom with heated floor, toilet and Italian shower, fully handicapped-accessible.
Traditional floor tiles as well as palomino squares, small washbasin made from local marble.
Separate toilet in the hall.
First floor:
Spacious landing with stone walls and a view of the woods. Traditional wood floor throughout.
Master bedroom (20 sq. metres) featuring an imposing Virginian four-poster bed (190x220), antique table, chairs and wardrobe. En suite bathroom with antique marble sink, spacious shower, toilet and washer & dryer.
Family bedroom (18 sq. metres) with queen-size bed (160×200) and Art Deco wardrobe, desk and chairs, cot or crib for small children as needed.
Fourth bedroom (16 sq. metres) with two single beds (90x190), chairs and dresser.

Domaine Le Trabet is an estate whose history dates back to the 18th century. Formerly a winery, it now offers three luxurious Gites (holiday homes), where travelers from around the world come and experience the joys of French living. The Domaine is situated in the countryside of Languedoc-Roussillon, close to the small village of Moussoulens, eight kilometers west of the famous medieval town of Carcassonne. Surrounding our property, vineyards, forests and fields of sunflowers delight the eye. The Pyrénées and the Montagnes Noires can be seen in the distance. The Mediterranean Sea is about an hour away and Spain and Andorra are not far either.

Een heel hartelijk ontvangst gehad. Overal is goed over nagedacht.

Restaurants, food & wine

Domaine Le Trabet is situated in the Cabardes wine region. The Cabardes, although not too well-known yet, obtained its own AOC label some years ago. South of Le Trabet you will find the Malepère, Limoux and Fitou vineyards. Limoux is famous for its excellent Chardonnay and also its sparkling wines such as the Blanquette de Limoux, ranking on a par with well-known champagnes but without the associated high price. The largest wine growing areas however are the Minervois (mostly red) and Corbières; producing excellent wines which, according to the experts, offer an optimal balance of quality and price. During your stay at Le Trabet, we propose to introduce you to some renowned vineyards where you can taste and purchase the wines directly from the winegrowers. Several wineries organize exhibitions and dinners during the summer, like Château de Jau (famous for its excellent Muscat wines) and Domaine de l’Hospitalet near Narbonne.

Although France is well-known for its ‘cuisine’, in the Aude there are many good local restaurants where you can eat and drink well for reasonable prices. There are a number of Michelin star rated restaurants, five of them quite close to Le Trabet.

Fresh vegetables, spices and marvelous selections of fruit can be found at local markets, like the ones in Bram (on Wednesdays), Montolieu (nearby ‘Village des livres’, well-known for its bookstores and galleries, including a well-stocked English bookshop), Revel, Carcassonne (three times a week) and many others.

Activities

Art and Culture
Beside some interesting regional museums, there are three museums well worth a visit: LAC (Lieu d’Art Contemporain), at Sigean, the Musée de l’Art Moderne in Ceret (Ceret has been home to many painters and artists between 1910 and 1925 like Braque, Chagall, Picasso, and Soutine) and the ‘Teatre Museu Dali’ at Figueras, just over the Spanish border and not far from beautiful Barcelona. During the summer months, several wine estates organize art exhibitions, either presenting one artist or providing a more general exhibition like Chateau de Jau with its Modern Art. In several villages one finds galleries with works of interesting regional artists. Toulouse, just one hour away, offers a variety of exhibitions and galleries. Antique and Brocante shops are to be found all over the Aude as well as the ‘Vide Greniers‘ organized by villages each weekend during the summer months.

Hike and Bike
Amateur speleologists will want to visit the nearby grottos of Limousis or the giant cave at Cabrespine. Rivers that disappeared long ago have left the Aude with beautiful gorges and canyons, worthwhile to visit, like the ‘Canyon de Cesse‘ near Minerve, the ‘Gorges de Clamoux‘ near Carcassonne and Cabrespine and the ‘Gorges de Galamus‘, ‘Defilé de Pierre Lys’ and ‘Gorges de St. Georges‘, all south of Limoux.

Sail and Surf
Leucate is one hour’s drive and offers both inland and seaside surfing. The whole coastline near Perpignan profits from the Tramontagne coming from the northwest, providing best conditions for surfers.

Further remarks

At the south side of the house, the large infinity swimming pool (15m x 7m) with its covered pool house is surrounded by sweeping terraces. During the warm and agreeable summer season, large trees provide shade. There is also a playground for children. An ancient ‘pigeonnier’ which was formerly used for rabbits, chickens and, of course, pigeons, now serves as a private barbecue area, surrounded by fragrant oleander. A short path leads away from the house to the surrounding fields towards the barn with its historic wine cellar: living testimony of Le Trabet’s role as an important wine making estate.
