The region has a long and interesting history. You will find stalactite - and prehistoric caves with rock paintings. The Celts left their trail, and so did the Romans with their thermal baths.
Visiting old Cathar strongholds or the mysterious Rennes-le-Chateau where the secrets of Bérenger Saunière (Dan Brown 'The Da Vinci Code') are still unresolved, is certainly worthwhile.
The waterfalls of Roquefort le Cascade are often dry in summer, but it is still a place of elves and gnomes.
The ancient natural Labyrinth at Nebias, where among others the 'Sapin harp' tree grows is also worth a visit.
Of course there are several lively local markets on different days of the week, eg. Sundays in Esperanza, Mondays in Mirepoix and Fridays in Lavelanet and Foix.
And we can't leave out the medieval citadel city of Carcassonne here, is 70km from and really worth a visit.
The Mediterranean coast is less than two hours driving, great for a day at seaside.
