The house
Sautou is perfect for couples in search of privacy, serenity, and comfort deep in the French countryside. Whimsically decorated using local brocantes and artists, this newly renovated stone guesthouse sports a pool, a totally private terrace area that includes pool furniture, a dining table for meals al fresco, and a Webber charcoal BBQ. The swimming pool abuts a grassed area with woods and hills behind. Tenants have EXCLUSIVE use of the pool -- privately set at the rear of the cottage.
The cottage contains a large sitting room centered around a wood stove with French doors opening onto the pool terrace; a large, fully equipped eat-in kitchen; a master bedroom with twin or double beds and an en-suite shower room. There is a walk-in Italian shower, basin, WC, washing machine, and dryer. Linen is included.

Sautou is located in the heart of the country -- often referred to as "La France Profonde" -- a phrase that denotes the existence of "profoundly" French aspects of provincial towns, French village life, and rural culture. We are located near the Lot River and 15 minutes from Villeneuve-sur-Lot, Bergerac and The Dordogne are about a 45 minute drive north. There is easy access to Bergerac airport which offers travel to and from many destinations including Rotterdam and 12 cities in the UK. Bordeaux and Toulouse airports are approximately a two hour drive.

Net terug van een heerlijke vakantie in Sautou! Prachtige gite, authentiek en smaakvol ingericht. Vooral de vele fraaie schilderijen spraken ons erg aan. Een bloemrijke tuin met als blikvanger de 200 jaar oude grote Lindeboom. Karel kan je alles vertellen over de streek, markten en brocantes en dat doet hij met veel enthousiasme. Bill zorgt iedere dag weer dat het zwembad heel schoon is en klaar voor gebruik! Ze zijn geweldige gastheren!

We hebben enorm genoten van onze 2 weken vakantie in deze fantastische gite. Bijzonder sfeervol ingericht, zalig privé zwembad, geweldig uitzicht en voldoende schaduwplekken. Een oase van rust in een gebied met talloze fantastische plaatsen op rij afstand. De gastvrijheid van Bill en Karel is even uniek als hartverwarmend. Karel kent de regio als geen ander en op verzoek deelt hij veel informatie over unieke plekken , leukste marktjes en de beste restaurants. We komen zeker terug !

Heerlijk verblijf gehad in mooi opgeknapte gite in een prachtige omgeving. Heel fijn privé zwembad zonder enige inkijk. Karel was onvermoeibaar om ons over de mooiste plekken van de Lot en Dordogne streek te vertellen. We komen zeker volgend jaar terug!
Restaurants, food & wine
There is a wide variety of restaurants in the surrounding towns, villages, and countryside. Meals can range from a local auberge's 3 course 'menu du jour' (often 13-15 Euros at lunch) to several Michelin-rated restaurants -- all within easy driving distance. Local specialities include garlic soup, foie gras, hazelnuts, walnuts, confit and breast of duck. Located in the center of France's plum and fruit orchard region, "Pruneaux d'Agen" is renowned throughout the Southwest! Google "La Table des Sens" in Lougratte or "Le Bistrot" in Monsempron-Libos for examples of a few of our favorites. It goes without saying that we are located in the midst of many famous wine growing areas including: St Emillion, Cahors, Duras, Bergerac, Buzet, Monbazillac.
Activities
Sautou is ideally placed in the beautiful countryside and yet not far from the medieval Bastide town of Penne d’ Agenais. Penne has a vibrant social scene with art shows, restaurants and brocantes. It lies on the pilgrim route of Le Chemin de Saint-Jacques-de-Compostele so it is a convenient location for walkers. There are also many official trails for hiking afficionados. The local roads through the hills and farms are perfect for cyclists because of the low volume of traffic and the incredible vistas. Horseback riding is available in the vicinity and there are boats available for rental on the Lot. Of course there are also the famous, daily, village markets that showcase produce, cheese and meats from local farmers and purveyors. However, if you prefer a more relaxing holiday, the privacy of the pool with its panorama of the countryside always beckons. The pool is kept in pristine condition. Guests have EXCLUSIVE use of the swimming pool. Toulouse and the vineyards of Bordeaux are easy day trips. The owners pride themselves on their knowledge of unique "hidden gems" of the area such as the Zadkine museum in Les Arques and the waterlily grower who supplied Monet with those famous flowers and who serves lunch on certain afternoons!
