"Chateau Barayre" is a beautiful medieval castle with swimming pool and stunning views over forests and countryside, located on the border between the Dordogne and Lot-et-Garonne (also see www.chateaubarayre.com).
The oldest parts of the castle date back to 1205. Over the centuries, important high-class families have inhabited Barayre, but it has also served as a monastery. In the early 13th century, the future Pope Clément the 5th stayed in Barayre. Today, Barayre is rented out to groups of friends and family for relaxing holidays....

Chateau Barayre is a wonderful place for a relaxing holiday with a family or friends. We offer two spacious accommodations for a total of 24 (12 and 12) people, both located side by side in a wing of the chateau. In both accommodations you will enjoy the fantastic charm of the chateau, and - even on the hottest summer days - the coolness of the more than one metre thick walls, a fantastic park garden with several terraces, barbecues, orchard (with lots of fruit from mid-July onwards!), indoor and outdoor games, a relaxed swimming pool and a herb garden where you can enjoy the last rays of the sun. Outside the summer, we host wedding parties in the large, authentic barn, which can also be used by holidaymakers.

The castle consists of four parts; the oldest part, "Gite Du pape", "Gite Alienor", the managers' home and a beautiful large old barn. The building forms an enclosed courtyard with herb garden where you can pick delicious herbs. In front is a large park garden, while all around you look out over rolling meadows where organic sheep are kept. The driveway with imposing old plane trees takes you under the tower. The atmosphere of earlier centuries is still present everywhere, embrasures, thick walls, high chic rooms, a special round tower. The thick walls also ensure that it is always nice and cool inside, even in the hottest summers. Respecting the building's long history, we have added all the modern luxuries, from spacious modern kitchen and WiFi to a lovely swimming pool. There is a large collection of indoor and outdoor games available; from board games to table tennis, and with the dressing-up box, the children imagine themselves prince and princess.

On the ground floor you will find the large 12th-century gentlemen's room (the current living quarters) with large fireplace. The kitchen, also on the ground floor, is equipped for groups and includes a 5-burner cooker, large oven, dishwasher and large fridge freezer. Large doors give access to the park garden with several terraces and the swimming pool which can be heated a few degrees extra by means of solar heat. On the first floor is the "Solarium". In former times, this room was used by the lord of the castle for posh gatherings. Nowadays, we use this impressive high room in summer as an extra room with a large double bed.

Sleep in Barayre in a unique 12th-century atmosphere, but even when you wake up we have a view to dream away. We have a maximum of 14 beds, excluding cots.
On the ground floor is the very spacious tower room with double bed and the "Green Room" with four single beds. The tower room has washing facilities with shower, washbasin and bidet. Attached to the kitchen is a neat bathroom that can be used by guests of the Green Room.
On the first floor, the solarium is furnished as a bedroom with a double bed in summer. The Solarium is also equipped with a small kitchen including a coffee machine, fridge and dishwasher. The solarium also provides access to a luxurious bathroom with bath and shower. Also on the first floor are the tower room (with double bed, washbasin and bidet) and the lovely "Orange Room" with four single beds.

The main building "gite Du pape" is for rent for groups of up to 12 people. Outside the high season, it is possible to rent with smaller groups of 2 people or more. Mail us for prices for smaller groups.

On "gite Alienor" there probably used to be a 2nd tower of the castle. Today, it is no longer there, but the atmosphere of past centuries is still present everywhere: small alcoves, large fireplace, old sink. The large living room, with large dining table and sitting area, is the hub of the house. In a corner of the room is the entrance to the kitchen with dishwasher, fridge, cooker and oven. From the kitchen you can walk out onto the courtyard veranda, one of the most delightful places in the castle to eat in the shade on hot summer days. Next to the living room and kitchen is a separate toilet on the ground floor. From the living room you can walk straight into the large park garden. The stairs in the living room lead to the first floor with 4 bedrooms with double bed and 2 cosy bedrooms with double bed. On this floor there is also a bathroom with shower, toilet and washbasin. There is also an extra toilet and washbasin in the hallway. In total, Gite Alienor can sleep 12 people.
