Surroundings
This holiday home is located just outside the village of Cuzorn in the Lot and Garonne department, bordering the Dordogne. For your daily shopping you can go to the supermarket Intermarché at 7 km and a few kilometres further is Fumel with Leclerc, Lidl, Action and a Dutch snack bar/restaurant.
Nearby is the village of Libos where there is a very large market once a week, popular in the area. The immediate area is known for its cosy bastides, where you can really enjoy the still original medieval architecture in the small streets. The villages and towns have festivals and festivities throughout the summer. There are brocantes, many art galleries, restaurants and various village festivals. The evening markets, the 'Marché Gourmandes are the biggest attraction and are what the South-West is known for. Every night there is one in the area and you can buy fresh home-made delicacies from all the stalls, which you then eat at long tables on the square. There is always live music present and you will be surprised what quality can be found in those little villages!
The Lot et Garonne has a rolling very green landscape and is known for its many sunflowers, castles and vineyards.
People call it "the Jardin de la France" here and you are in the Cahors region. This famous region makes one of the very best wines you won't find at the liquor store in the Netherlands. Cahors wines are fast beating Bordeaux and everywhere you can taste and buy top wines for ridiculously low prices at the domains. Cahors wines are full-bodied heavy wines made from the Malbec grape, with or without a little Merlot mixed in.
Nearby are Chateau Bonaguil and Biron and famous 13th-century towns everywhere.
For the kids, there is park Walibi in Agen, a climbing park nearby and much more.
Marvel at the low prices you pay in the restaurants around noon. I don't say restaurantJES for nothing because as mass tourism is foreign here, everything is still cosy and small-scale. Most prepare their meals with local and often organic produce.
The managers of Pouget are Daan and Marjolein, Daan has a nice website where you can find everything, look for that at 'lotgenoten' punt fr and click on 'streekinfo'. 'Lot' in Lotgenoten stands for the river :-) Or ask them yourself, they know the area very well and live 15 minutes from the holiday home.

Restaurants, food & wine
The blue grape variety Malbec is native to southwestern France. If grown on a good terroir and under good conditions, the grape can produce both powerful and complex red wines with lots of tannins, and full-bodied wines with supple fruit. But, all Malbecs have a rustic character. The aroma of a Malbec wine usually contains fruit of blackberries, cherries and currants, and you can also detect a lot of spice. In addition, the wine often has solid aromas, such as choco, laurel, leather, truffle and brushwood. Note, however, that a Malbec wine does not always contain all the above scents. They vary, depending on country and region of origin and, of course, the production methods chosen by the winemaker.
So France is the homeland of the Malbec and the wine region of Cahors the cradle of the grape. Cahors is located in the southwest of France. It is one of the oldest wine regions in the world and comprises about 4,200 hectares of vineyard. The Malbec grape is the great pride of the region. The best wines from this grape are powerful, intense and tannic. For a long time, this meant they needed several years to reach drinking age, but for some time now this has been changing. Thanks to the tactic of letting the grapes ripen longer, as well as other improved winemaking techniques, the tannins soften and these French red wines become increasingly fruity and supple, allowing them to be drunk earlier.
Most restaurants in the area have local Malbecs on their menus and, unsurprisingly, prices are very reasonable as a result. If you want information on local restaurants, ask the managers, they know them well!!!
