Villefranche-du-Périgord is located in the far south of the Dordogne department between the two big rivers Dordogne and Lot. The area is hilly and wooded and perfect for lovely walks. The small village, in a very quiet area, is situated on a hill and dates back to the 12th century.
History
Périgord pourpe, the purple Périgord, is the area of fortified towns and vineyards in the southwest of the Dordogne. Amidst vineyards such as Monbzillac, Pécharmant and Montrave, among others, is Bergerac. Bergerac, with many buildings from the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries. Monpazier, Beaumont, Eymet, Lalinde and Molières are bastides, fortified towns.
Périgord noir, the black Périgord, is the area of prehistoric remains in the Vézère valley and the Dordogne valley. Fifteen of the painted and scratched caves have been declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. The Dordogne River passes limestone ravines and forests of holm oaks. The valley is home to numerous medieval and Renaissance buildings and castles, such as Domme, Beynac and La Roque-Gageac.

Reviews
Judith from Eindhoven,
Gerda F. from Nederland,
Gaëlle et Petar from France,
Restaurants, food & wine
Culinary
Périgord cuisine offers all kinds of traditional dishes made with products grown here. Local products include: duck dishes (confit and magret de canard), omelettes (with porcini mushrooms and truffles, among others) and salads with nut oil. Sweet chestnut is used in numerous regional dishes. You can enjoy the culinary specialities in a restaurant within walking distance.
Truffles, the black gold
In Sorges, there is a museum about truffles. After visiting the museum, you can walk a path at the "truffières" and look for truffles.
La Truffe noir en Périgord, at Péchalifour in Saint Cyprien, lets visitors search for truffles in the wilderness! Edouard tells the story of the truffle, the connection between plants, trees and mushrooms, between the sun and water, as well as stories of animals, pigs, and dogs.
Nuts
The Ecomusée de la Noix, at Castelnaud tells the history of walnuts, operations, cultivation and harvesting.
Wine
* Musée du Vin, de la Batellerie et de la Tonnellerie in Bergerac explains barrel-making for the region's wines, transport and the history of viticulture.
* Wine route from Villefranche-du-Périgord, where you will find Château Lamartine, at Sorutac, along the way.
Markets are held all over the Périgord. The speciality markets, held in Périgueux, Sarlat, among others, offer the opportunity to taste regional products.
Activities
In the village, you can see the work of the châtaignier (person who works with chestnuts) and be told all about the chestnuts and mushrooms that grow in the chestnut groves. Châtaigne du Périgord has more than 7 hectares of organic chestnut orchard on the domaine de Rapatel, where the owners will be happy to tell you about the "bread-tree". In the Boutique, you can discover the delights of this Camille chestnut. In autumn, Villefranche-du-Périgord hosts the festival for the sweet chestnut and cep. On summer evenings, the village often organises a repas (meal outside on the market square) in which you can take part for a fee.
The Dordogne offers something for everyone:
* 1000 castles spread over 575 communes
* a journey through prehistory, medieval towns, castles, bastides and churches, along the rivers and by the lakes
* Visit gardens and parks
* Gastronomic delights or simply good food
* canoeing or kayaking, horse riding, fishing, cycling, hiking, golfing, hot-air ballooning or a falconry show.
* every village has its own festival with music, fireworks, tournaments, in which everyone can participate
* enjoy nature, where you will be surprised by wildlife: deer, rabbits, but also foxes and badgers. But you can also visit the unique gardens.
Cycling paradise
Dordogne is France's cycling paradise. It is wonderful to pedal along a vast meandering river with imposing limestone rocks, medieval castles, forests and valleys. The rural back roads are among the quietest in France. VillaFranche offers you a week of five cycling tours. But you can also create your own route using the cycling maps available in the holiday home.
Horseback riding
Ferme équestre at Belves will welcome you in beautiful surroundings and guide you for rides of an hour or more.
Hiking
From "Le Bourg"(the village square), several routes have been set out over various distances. VillaFranche offers you several walking routes in the Land of the Chestnuts.
Cosy swimming in the public swimming pool, with paddling pool, is at walking distance from the holiday home. The swimming pool is open from June to September. The fishing pond is located in front of the swimming pool. You should buy your fishing licence at the Tabac or tourist office.
