The house
This charming renovated 16th-century farmhouse, Le Mas, offers you 5-star discreet luxury and understated style, with 5 bedrooms (each with their own bathroom) and a fantastic summer kitchen overlooking the private pool, fields and woods. If you need a 6th bedroom, you can rent Le Mazet in addition. Le Mas and Le Mazet are two detached houses on one property, which can be rented together or separately. There is an EV charger and high-speed internet (250Mpbs +).
Le Mas' well-equipped kitchen (60m2) is literally the centre of the house. The terracotta tiles continue into the living room (48m2). 2 bedrooms can be found on the ground floor, and 3 upstairs. The semi-open summer kitchen is opposite the kitchen and has a large dining table with seating for 12.
The terracotta tiles continue into the living room (44m2), which, like the kitchen, has a large fireplace with wood-burning stove (wood is provided) and doors leading to the pool and summer kitchen. There are 3 comfortable sofas and many books, DVDs and games to enjoy.
If you want to follow the news, or watch a movie, you can do so on the flat-screen TV with English channels. There is a wireless speaker that can be connected to a phone, tablet or laptop via Bluetooth.
Two bedrooms can be found on the ground floor, each with two single beds and bathroom with shower. One of these rooms is wheelchair accessible, as is most of the ground floor and the outside area. In the other (bedroom 5) a third bed can be added, so that 13 people can stay in Le Mas & Le Mazet. The remaining three bedrooms are on the first floor and are served by two staircases. The two main bedrooms are accessed by the stairs leading from the kitchen to the first floor.
These bright bedrooms are extremely spacious (33m² and 23m²) and have a 180 x 200 cm bed, ample wardrobe space, wooden floors and beautiful original beams. The windows overlook the fields and woods beyond and double as lookouts to spot deer, birds of prey and wild boar. The bathrooms off the main bedrooms have both a bathtub and a shower. The third bedroom is at the top of the stairs located to the right of the kitchen. This room has a 180 x 200 cm bed and a shower.
Opposite the kitchen is the covered summer kitchen (65m²). This former barn has kept its original roof, but the openings on three sides offer you shade and a cooling breeze. There is a small kitchen with sink, fridge and a Weber gas barbecue with 3 burners (gas bottles are provided). A large dining table with 12 comfortable chairs make it the perfect place for long lunches, finding cool in the heat of the day, copious dinners and long, balmy evenings.
The private pool is 10 x 5 metres, heated, saltwater and with an electric cover. The pool is open from April to October. A saltwater pool uses the process of electrolysis to purify the water without the addition of chlorine, resulting in softer water and less risk of allergies and eye and skin irritations. A saltwater pool has only about 10% of the ocean's salt content.
The pool is positioned so that you can take maximum advantage of the miles of distant views over the fields and forests beyond, take a seat on the sunbeds and chairs and enjoy! If you want to quietly read a book, there are several secluded spots in the garden where you can seclude yourself. In the garden there are several games to play such as table tennis, football, boules, badminton rackets and shuttles, children's croquet. There is also a covered bocce court.
We are delighted that Le Mas has been awarded 5 stars by the Tourism Council of Dordogne Perigord on behalf of the French Ministry of Tourism. The Daily Telegraph, the UK's leading quality newspaper, published an online review of Le Mas & Le Mazet and rated us with a 9/10.
Le Mas & Le Mazet are located in the village of Sainte Croix, right between the fortified medieval bastide towns of Monpazier and Beaumont du Périgord and only a 40-minute drive from Bergerac airport.

Reviews
Andrew from Chichester,
We took our whole family to the Le Mas and Mazet and had a throughly excellent time from start to finish. The facilities available are second to none and Rupert and Frank went out of their way to ensure our family time together was extra special.
Their recommended private chef Didier is also worth considering if you want an extra special evening as we did on one occasion - the food was amazing.
Lots of lovely local places to visit to keep all ages entertained.
Brian from Essex,
I really enjoyed my stay at Le Mazet. It was very comfortable and provided everything I wanted. It is located in a very quiet attractive area near to some beautiful places to visit like Monpazier and Bergerac. The owners Rupert and Frank were extremely welcoming and helpful. I would unreservedly recommend Le Mazet as a great place to stay and explore the Dordogne region
Annabel from Ireland,
We have just returned from the most wonderful week at Le Mas and Le Mazet. It's not that we were trying to but we could not find one single fault. Rupert and Franck have clearly thought of everything - the beds are exceptionally comfortable, their restoration is remarkable, every angle and viewpoint is carefully considered and the views and pool are epic (I could go on and on). If you are looking for a relaxing haven amongst fascinating, beautiful countryside and with impeccable hosts then look no further.
Restaurants, food & wine
The region is famous for its culinary options. There are several restaurants in the vicinity where you can enjoy a good meal.
If you want to cook and experiment with French cuisine yourself, you can get your ingredients at the various markets held each week in the villages. Furthermore, Beaumont (12 minutes) offers a large supermarket, bakeries, pharmacy, bank, post office and other shops. Monpazier (12 minutes) also has a wide range of shops.

Here is a selection of the various activities you can undertake using Le Mas & Le Mazet as a base. We will be happy to advise you on walking and cycling routes, rental locations for bike, car or boat, make reservations or provide you with route maps.
Hiking over the gently rolling hills: enjoy beautiful walking routes as soon as you step outside your door. Walk through woods and fields or along country roads to the medieval town of Montferrand de Périgord (20 minutes' walk away) or to the 12th-century church of Sainte Croix (20 minutes' walk away). There are plenty of hiking trails nearby, for example from Monpazier to the megaliths around the town.
Hiking trails: there are trails nearby to suit all tastes, from the Grand Randonnées such as the GR36 and GR6 to waymarked circular walks (5km to 40km) around Monpazier.
Bicycle rental: if you don't want to or can't bring your own bike, BikeHireDirect rents bikes with helmet and lock through us. They will be brought to and collected from Le Mas & Le Mazet. You have nothing to worry about. We get a small commission which we pass on to you.
Cycling: 500 metres from the property is cycle route 26, a 70km circular route past Monpazier, Cadouin and back. There are many other cycling routes nearby that take you off the beaten track along the hidden treasures of the Dordogne.
Canoeing: canoes (from 1 to 4 people) can be hired at various locations in the Dordogne and Vézère valleys. The rental company will pick you up at the end of the trip and take you back to the starting point in a minibus. Evening torchlight tours: in summer, from around 9pm, take part in one of the guided torchlight tours in Monpazier, Beaumont du Périgord, or Cadouin. Guided tours are also offered during the day.
Prehistoric excavations and caves: more than 50 caves, rock shelters, settlement remains and burial sites have already been discovered in the Périgord. Visit the National Prehistoric Museum in Les Eyzies (45 minutes away), also several caves and settlements to visit and, of course, the famous rock paintings of Lascaux.
Castles: there are reputedly 1001 castles in the Dordogne! Highlights are undoubtedly the castles of Biron, Beynac, Castelnaud (with knightly games and activities based on its weapons collection) and Les Milandes, the former home of Josephine Baker with falcon shows in the castle gardens.
Gardens: there are two magical gardens not to be missed if you have the time: the classic Jardins du Manoir d'Eyrignac (1 hour 15 minutes away) and the hanging gardens of le Château de Marqueyssac (50 minutes away).
Naturally formed caves: the Maxange caves (30 minutes away) are praised for the size and quality of the stalactites and stalagmites and the unusual and eccentric crystal panels.
