The house

  • Quiet, rural area with some agricultural activity

This converted barn has been lovingly restored. There is a large kitchen diner with range cooker and beautiful terrace for outside dining with views overlooking the valley and lake. The large sitting room with sofa bed and chairs has a huge log burner and shuttered windows. There is a large mezzanine bedroom with double bed and ensuite bathroom, with shower and bath. The exposed stonework and beams hint at the buildings age. There is a private entrance to the chalet and the garden is fenced off. For couples with children, there is a sofa bed downstairs or a single bed or cots can be added to the large bedroom.

Carsac-de-Gurson is an ancient hamlet with a handful of houses. The pace of village life is slow but that is it's charm.

Across the valley is the historical ruined Chateau de Gurson. It is rumoured that some of the chateau's stones were used to build the Chalet. The property is adjacent to the ancient village church, which dates back to Roman times. The local artisanal boulangerie is a 4 km stroll across vineyards or 5 minute drive away, the bread and pastries are exceptional! Just a mile away is a freshwater swimming lake, lac de Gurson, perfect for cooling down or chilling out in the summer.

We absolutely loved our stay at Le Chalet. It had all the amenities you could possibly need and the fact it was dog friendly was perfect. The surroundings and scenery were stunning and we felt truly relaxed after our stay here, as did our dog!

Restaurants, food & wine

The Dordogne is a foodie heaven! There are daily markets selling seasonal produce and local delicacies. The quality is exceptional. Within a short drive you have gourmand experiences from cafes and brasseries to Michelin starred restaurants.

The Chalet sits with the Montravel wine region. Our neighbour is an excellent vigneron and is happy to give you a tour of the vineyard, and a taste of his delicious wine. Less than 30 minutes away, the vineyards belong to the world famous St Emilion-Bordeaux appellation, its worth the short trip to St Emilion for tours and tasting.

During the summer, nearby Villefranche-de Lonchat has a weekly Friday night food market offering communal dining in the town square, and a wide variety of meal choices with accompanying wine offerings.

Activities

Just over a mile away, the ruined Chateau de Gurson overlooks the Lac de Gurson, a charming swimming lake with beach, playground, cafe, and kayaking and paddle boarding in the summer months.

Cycling and walking routes thread their way between villages and vineyards in the beautiful countryside around the chateau. Just next door, Vincent the vigneron makes the excellent Reve de Ternac wine, and always welcomes visitors to taste and buy.

You're 30 minutes from St Emilion, a remarkable medieval town at the centre of one of the world's premier wine regions. Stroll the cobbled streets, explore the life of the eponymous saint, buy fabulous wine and have lunch in one of the many great bistros.

Dordogne markets are full of life, and a chance to find local specialties like heritage vegetables, foie gras, and Perigord truffles. The Saturday market in St Foy le Grande, just 15 minutes away, has been voted one of the best markets in France.

The chic, cosmopolitan city of Bordeaux is just an hour away. From flea markets to designer boutiques to the foodie heaven of the Marché du Capucins, there's shopping for everyone. Bordeaux also boasts museums, theatres and a thriving culinary scene.
