Activities
From the Pré des Vergnes estate, you can go hiking, mountain biking or mountain biking.
5 minutes away, the Jouillat beach is equipped and supervised. A beach restaurant is open every lunchtime and evening.
You can practice canoeing, paddle, motorboat, pedal boat, play tennis or miniature golf. For the more courageous there is a zip line across the lake.
For fishermen the Creuse is a paradise. At the three lakes you have several launching points and night fishing areas for carp. There are several 1st and 2nd category rivers near the domain. For your initiation, or to improve your skills, fishing guides are at your disposal.
10 minutes from the gîte you can go climbing on the wall of a viaduct.
At 20 mn there is the 18 holes golf of La Jonchère.
The wolf park of Chabrières, the giant Labyrhinte, or the accro-branche will amuse young and old.
For those who like Nordic dogs and walking, Julien will make you discover the cani'rando, the cani'trottinette or the cani'kart. Children love it!
On the more cultural side, the Creuse is full of treasures.
Don't miss the 12th century castle of Boussac, where the famous Lady of the Unicorn tapestries were discovered, clinging to the granite walls of the Petite Creuse gorges, the castle offers an impressive sight.
In the same area you should not miss the perched village of Toulx Ste Croix whose tower dominates six departments. The magnificent and grandiose view gives you a glimpse of the Puy de Dôme and the Puy de Sancy. The small Romanesque church of Toulx, separated in two by the road, is a curiosity. Not far from this village the remarkable site of the Pierres Jaumâtres inspired Georges Sand for her novel "Jeanne". It is a mass of enormous thousand-year-old rocks which contribute to the legends and mystery of the place.
The fully furnished 14th century château de Villemonteix is also worth a visit. Its architecture is typical of Creuse castles.
The valley of the Creuse painters was the cradle of the Crozant school where impressionists such as Claude Monet worked and left many works representing the Creuse landscapes. The ruins of the old fortress of Crozant from the 10th to 12th century perched on its rock at the confluence of the Creuse and Sedelle rivers forming a romantic and enchanting landscape. You will finish with a relaxing boat trip to the Eguzon dam, sailing along the meandering river Creuse.
There are several remarkable gardens to visit. My favourites are the Jardin de la Sédelle and Val Maubrune.
You won't leave the Creuse without visiting the new International Aubusson Tapestry Museum. The Aubusson Tapestry is listed as an "Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity" by UNESCO. You will find various exhibitions of tapestries in several churches and castles in the department.
In Creuse almost all the churches are listed and are therefore in perfect condition. They all date from the 12th century. The Abbatiale Ste Valérie in Chambon sur Voueize (3rd favourite village of the French in 2016) and the Abbaye de Bénévent, situated on the Compostelle route, are pure jewels of 12th century architecture. As for the church of Moutier d'Ahun, it has stalls sculpted in the 17th century which are of exceptional beauty.
You will leave without having seen everything of course, as this is only a sample of what you can discover. Between the monuments, theme parks, natural sites, gardens, fishing and sports, there is something for everyone. You will leave the Creuse with many unforgettable memories. For those who simply want to relax, the Creuse is the ideal place to recharge their batteries.
