The house

  • Quiet, rural area with some traffic

We welcome you to our historic farmhouse at the end of a dead-end road, where we live a wonderfully simple and peaceful life together with our cats, goats and chickens.

At Les Cavaleries, you will experience the unique combination of the homeliness of a Chambres d'Hôtes with the privacy of a gîte.

Les Cavaleries is tucked away in the hills of the Dordogne valley, near the picturesque village of Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne, one of the most beautiful villages in Corrèze. The 8 other villages listed as the most beautiful in France are in the immediate vicinity. As are more than 50 marked hiking trails.
We never get bored in our region, thanks to the river, the beautiful villages, the country roads, the photogenic cows, the markets, the restaurants, nature, castles and caves. There are 3 major attractions nearby: the spectacularly located pilgrimage site of Rocamadour, the most beautiful cave in France at Padirac and Collonges-la-Rouge, the first village ever on the list of most beautiful villages!

But we never get bored in our own garden either. The golden oriole, the green woodpecker, butterflies, but also buzzards and kites fly overhead. Just like the flying deer, which is rare in the Netherlands. But foxes, badgers and deer have also been spotted in our own garden. In the evening, the stars are countless and if we are lucky, we hear the owl call!

The flat: The spacious flat is on the first and second floor of our natural stone farmhouse. An old staircase leads you to your private semi-covered terrace, right next to the ancient bread oven, where the inhabitants of the hamlet used to come to bake their bread. This terrace is wonderfully sunny, where you can enjoy the sunrise every morning and an impressive starry sky in the evening. You enter your flat in a hallway, where there is an extra toilet. On this floor is the cosy living room, with a well-equipped kitchen, a wood-burning stove and many authentic elements, such as alcoves, sinks and old beams. On the second floor is a spacious and bright double bedroom with stunning views and the bathroom with shower and toilet.
The apartment does not have its own washing machine, but you can always ask us to do some laundry.

At the back of the house is our large garden overlooking the hills opposite. In the distance, you can see a few hamlets and even 2 castles. There are both sunny and shady seats in garden and also a sunny gazebo, built from old window frames and doors.

We always love it when our guests enjoy the garden with a book, a coffee, breakfast or wine and sometimes even spot new animals.

Les Cavaleries is a place to unwind, to enjoy nature, starry skies, French cuisine, wines and cheeses, but also the beautiful surroundings.

See you soon!

In the hills between the picturesque Beaulieu sur Dordogne and the village Nonards. From the house you walk straight into the woods. The environment is very beautiful with many medieval villages in the immediate vicinity, within walking and cycling distance. The famous tourist destinations are accessible by car. In the immediate vicinity you will find for example 6 villages on the list of most beautiful villages of France. There are several places of pilgrimage within driving distance such as the most beautifully situated Rocamadour. Also the amazing caves of Padirac are 35 minutes away.
We have been living in this region for a while now and we keep discovering new things. We have come to the conclusion that we find this area, Vallee de Dordogne in the south of the Correze and north of the Lot, the most beautiful area of France. Most of our visitors very much agree.

Restaurants, food & wine

The area has many nice restaurants. The local wineries are also worth a visit. There are several farms open to visitors.

Activities

Hiking: There are more than 50 hiking trails in the region. But we have discovered routes of our own, such as starting from Les Cavaleries to Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne or to Nonards.

Cycling: The beautiful surroundings and narrow roads through the farmland are a walhalla for cyclists. There are also many routes for mountain bikers.

Cultural heritage: In fact, it is almost too much to mention. Starting with all the villages that rank high on the list of most beautiful villages in France. Starting with the very first village ever on the list: Collonges-la-Rouge. Built entirely from the red natural stone found in the surrounding fields. Equally beautiful is Carennac, built from yellow stone.
Since last year, Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne can also call itself a most beautiful village in France, and quite rightly so! And so there are six more villages in the immediate vicinity. Here's just one more: the spectacularly located pilgrimage town of Rocamadour is definitely worth a visit!

Also the castle of Bretenoux should not be missed when visiting our region. You can get there by car, but there is also a beautiful walking route.

Nature: The cirque with its steep cliffs and waterfall at Autoire is a must for hikers. As are the beautiful waterfalls at Murel. The Dordogne valley is sparsely populated, the villages are still as they were 500 years ago, the farmers are still small-scale, so the hiking trails, whether they go through the woods or the fields, are always particularly beautiful.

Caves: There are several caves in the region, but we will mention the most famous: Gouffre de Padirac. You descend into the deep hole via stairs or a lift. Then you board a boat to discover the magical world of this cave after 15 minutes of sailing. Via a headset, you get an explanation of the discovery of this cave in any language you like. No one comes back disappointed from this visit!

Outdoors: Opportunities abound: canoeing on the Dordogne. Abseiling at Autoire, Canyoning at Aubazine, horse riding etc.

Culinary: There are many regional products to taste, such as strawberries, wine, vin paille, cheese, foie gras, sausages, nuts, nut oil, nut cake and recently also algae. In the months of July and August, all these regional products can be tasted at the various markets. Each village has its night market one day a week, with an organic market, bbq and drinks stall, where you bring your own cutlery, possibly a tablecloth and join the long tables.

Art: Our favourite museum is in the old castle of Saint Laurent les Tours, where there is Jean Lurcat's studio museum, where he stayed until his death. No one comes back disappointed from this outing either. Usually with a poster or postcard of one of the artworks in the handbag.

There is so much more to mention. Fortunately, a brochure is available in the apartment and we are always willing to help you choose from the large selection, while enjoying a drink in our garden.

Good luck with your preparations,
Greetings John and Maja

Further remarks

The surroundings are very beautiful to explore by bicycle. The routes are quite tough. Riding flat is almost impossible. Whichever way you cycle, it is always beautiful. If you want to walk a part of the GR route or Compostella route, you can. If requested, we bring you to the starting point and pick you up later at your destination.
