The house
Welcome to Le Moulin de Chazotte, a 16th century French watermill offering beautiful, family friendly self-catering holiday accommodation near Cognac, France.
Our four exclusive gîtes are brimming with charm and character whilst offering all the modern comforts and facilities to ensure you have a relaxing and rewarding holiday. All gîtes have their own private terrace and also offer access to 12 acres of grounds and facilities, including the large heated swimming pool.
Located in blissful rural tranquillity within the Poitou-Charente region on the French Atlantic coast, we are only 10 minutes away from historic Cognac and a short drive to the nearest village with that all important local boulangerie. This picturesque region is steeped in Roman and Medieval history and is known for its sleepy villages, Romanesque churches, heritage towns, as well as for the famous and delicious Cognac drink of course.
La Maison de Hibou, translated as "The Owl House" and so named after the magnificent barn owl which was found roosting in the roof beams during the renovation. Split over two floors and with two bedrooms this gite can comfortably accommodate four people with the option for two more on a sofa bed in the lounge if required.
Le Hibou forms half of the grand, main building which was built in the mid 1890s and adjoins La Principale. This charming gite has many original architectural features, including traditional Charentais roof beams and beautiful exposed stonework. From the master bedroom you look out over the vineyards and from the rear windows, watch the river and its wildlife flow by.

Le Moulin de Chazotte is nestled amongst the vineyards and sunflower fields of Cognac country. The mill sits astride the river Chazotte, which was once used to power the mill on the site. With 12 acres of land mixed between woodland, fields and gardens, the mill is blissfully remote with the only other inhabitants being other guests and the local wildlife - from occasional deer and wild boar to the many birds of prey circling the blue skies above.
The nearest village, Cherves-Richemont, is just a short drive away (2 km) and offers a local bakers, butchers, restaurant, pharmacy and small village shop. A little further afield (7km / 10 mins drive) is the historic town of Cognac. The surrounding towns of Angoulême, Saintes and St. Jean d'Angély are steeped in Roman and Medieval history with fascinating architecture and bustling markets. The beautiful French seaside towns of La Rochelle and Royan are just an hours drive and the famous vineyards of Bordeaux slightly further but well worth a visit.

The nearest restaurant is in our local village of Cherves Richemont which is just a short drive, or 40 minute walk away. The nearby town of Cognac also has a great selection of bars, shops and restaurants.

The pool is without a doubt our biggest attraction for young and old alike but particularly for children. At 12 metres by 6 metres, the pool is beautifully cool in summer but can be heated and lit for evenings or the later summer months. With a shallow end and deep end plus steps down to access. The pool house features a toilet and changing room and there is a solar shower and ample loungers for you to while away the day here. The pool is about 50 metres from the gites and is completely private with views across the vineyards and to the village of Cherves-Richemont on the hillside.
Guests are free to roam the 12 acres of land that adjoin the mill - from bird and wildlife spotting in the woods, canoeing on the river, tractor driving, to playing a group game of rounders on the open field.
In addition to the "great outdoors" we also have a number of activities to keep the whole family entertained - badminton, table football, childrens playground, boules. For those that want something a bit less active, all the gites come complete with a whole host of board games and books.
For the social butterflies amongst you, we often host group barbecues, drinks and outdoor cinema nights so you can come along and get to know the other guests.
If you wish to get away from the Mill, there are plenty of activities and days out nearby and we are happy to advise, provide recommendations and even make bookings for you.

Further remarks
Because of its location, a car is highly recommended for guests. Of course other forms of transport are also an option, particularly bike hire which is very popular in the area and something we can help you arrange for your stay.
Additional price info and offers
All bed linen and towels included for each week. If staying for more than one week, additional linen also provided free of charge.
Security deposit of EUR 200 also required and will be refunded if no breakages or damage during your stay. Tourist tax of Eur 0.80 per adult per day is also applicable.
