The south of the Charente, bordering the Dordogne, offers beautiful countryside, a wonderful sunny climate and an opportunity to see France at its best. The quiet lanes are ideal for touring around by car, bicycle or on foot to explore the countryside, historic villages and towns, the lakes and the authentic local character such as markets, good restaurants, vineyards and cognac distilleries. Chez Sarrazin provides an excellent base to explore the many attractions of the Charente and Dordogne. It is a short distance from the village of Brossac with its old stone houses set around the 12th century church. There is a good range of facilities including restaurants, tennis and bocce courts, bakeries, grocery stores, a pharmacy and a butcher. A tourist office is located in the town hall. The pretty town of Chalais, dominated by its 16th century castle, is located 10 minutes drive away and has many shops and a supermarket as well as a colourful and lively market on Monday mornings. One of the highlights of the summer is an international show and during the year there are concerts and exhibitions in the castle and its gardens. Also within easy reach is Aubeterre-sur-Dronne which boasts an exceptional cultural heritage which, combined with its beautiful natural surroundings and the famous French “art de vivre”, makes it the perfect place to visit. Officially listed as one of The Most Beautiful Villages in France it has welcomed tourists, visitors and pilgrims on their way to Spain for over 1000 years. Visitors today can enjoy meandering through the narrow streets, popping in to admire the many specialist shops, including a leather worker and potters, and then settling down in the village square at one of the cafés or restaurants, comfortably shaded by ancient lime trees. Also within easy reach are: Royan on the Atlantic coast; Bordeaux, the historic and cosmopolitan city; St Emilion and Cognac, known worldwide for their famous wine and cognac; Périgueux; Bergerac; Riberac with its famous weekly market; Poitiers with the famous Futuroscope and the Vallée des Singes monkey park; and Angoulême, the walled capital of the Charente with shopping boulevards and historic buildings.

Brossac, about 1.5kms away, is a large village in the southern Charente and offers easy access to the Dordogne, Charente Maritime and Aquitaine regions. The village has a bank, pharmacy, post office, hair dressers, tabac, bakeries, minimarkets, a butcher, well-stocked builders supply, garage and petrol station and 2 restaurants. A tourist office is located in the town hall. The village also has 2 tennis courts that can be rented by popping into the Pharmacy. Not far away from the village centre you'll also find Etang Vallier for swimming, mini golf and other recreational activities. There are biking and hiking trails all around. In the village square, you'll find the departure point for the newly completed bicycle loops. With 3 distances, there is something for everyone. Bicycles can be rented locally.

Activities

Chez Sarrazin comprises 3.5 acres of gardens, lawns, wooded grounds and a vineyard and is surrounded by arable farming land and fields of sunflowers.
