Surroundings
Nestled in lush countryside, midway between the Pyrénées mountains and the Atlantic ocean and only 2.5 km from the medieval spa town of Salies de Béarn, Domaine Lavie dates back to the 18th century. The former farm buildings, set in 2.5 hectares of private grounds, have been converted into 4 independent holiday cottages, each with their own private terrace.
From the shared swimming pool there are stunning views over the surrounding countryside to the Pyrénées beyond. The large pool, with its elegant curved shape, blends perfectly with the gently undulating hills. At 14m x 8m it is big enough for you to swim lengths, have a leisurely dip or for children to play. The spacious, south facing terrace, with sunbeds and parasoles, ensures that there is plenty of room for everyone to relax, unwind or sunbathe whilst enjoying the stunning views over the surrounding countryside.
The picturesque town of Salies de Béarn is famous for its salt, an essential part of the culinary repertoire of south west France, and its thermal spa, where visitors can enjoy the warm, mineral rich waters that contain ten times more salt than sea water.

Restaurants, food & wine
Salies de Béarn is home to several excellent restaurants as well as a selection of cafés and bars. There is a lively market every Thursday morning and a smaller local produce market each Saturday morning, both offering locally produced charcuterie (including Bayonne Ham made with salt from Salies), Brebis cheese, fois gras and local wines. There are several boulangeries (everyone has their favourite!), two charcuteries/butchers, two wine shops that can recommend the perfect wine to accompany your market purchases, and several independent grocery shops, as well as a supermarket. For wine lovers, a visit to Salies de Béarn's last independent wine producer, Domaine Lapeyre et Guilhemas, is a must, together with visits to the neighbouring appellations of Jurançon and Irouléguy.
Activities
The Béarn region and the neighbouring Basque Country are areas abundant in historic sites, ancient châteaux, picturesque villages, lively markets and wonderful restaurants. The beautiful towns of Pau, Biarritz, Bayonne and St Jean de Luz are all within easy reach, as are the fabulous beaches of the Atlantic coast, famous for surfing but also offering miles and miles of golden sands for families to enjoy.
The magnificent scenery of the Pyrénées is just over an hour away and the mountains provide a paradise for walkers, birdwatchers, skiers and serious cyclists. For those less keen on walking, Le Petit Train d'Artouste, the highest train in Europe, or Le Petit Train de La Rhune, a cog-driven railway at Sare, will both take you on a breathtaking trip up the mountains ending in spectacular views. If you are curious about caves, there are several worth visiting, including Les Grottes de Sare, close to La Rhune, and Les Grottes de Bétharram towards Lourdes.
If you're looking for water based activities, canoeing and kayaking are available just down the road at Sauveterre de Béarn and Sorde d'Abbaye, as well as whitewater rafting for those who are after something a bit more exhilarating!
In short, there are a wealth of activities on offer within easy reach for all ages and interests in the Béarn and Basque regions.
