Serendipity : Noun: English definition : The occurrence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way.
Sérendipité : Noun: Définition Française : Un heureux hazard
We found our charming gite, 'Sérendipité' by chance and indeed we've always considered it to be ''A happy hazard!''as the French definition suggests!
Being the last house in the absolutely delightful village of Rouelle and standing alone on a seldom used lane this charming traditional stone and colombage property is the perfect place to escape into the breathtaking Normandy countryside.
A simply charming house that has been thoroughly modernised yet still retains a sense of age and history. You will arrive at the gite and park your car(s) on the ample, adjacent. private car park. The gite is accessed from the front door into the spacious lounge/dining room.
Two comfortable, leather sofas are situated in front of the 'stone' fireplace under the gaze of the ornamental stag's head. A tv with English & French programmes is set into a large modified armoire and the fusion of modern technology and olde worlde is disguised by the splendour of a bygone age.
A large dining table with 4 matching chairs is situated on the opposite wall.
The fully equipped kitchen is situated through a door off the lounge and has all the cooking facilities, including all the usual crockery and utensils to be expected. In here you will also find a ceramic hob & double electric oven, microwave, fridge freezer and dishwasher. Bon Appetite!
Another door through the kitchen takes you into the utility room where you will find a washing machine and clothes racks. There is also a toilet and washbasin in this room.
The original oak staircase winds upstairs onto a small landing area with access to the bedrooms from here.
The first bedroom is a good sized room with a lovely view over the large rear garden, and beyond. It has a comfortable bed (memory foam mattress) with traditional French furnishings including wardrobe, dressing table, 2 comfortable chairs and bedside table. The en-suite ('Jack & Jill') shower room, with toilet and washbasin is accessed through a separate (private) door within the bedroom.
Bedroom 2 is also accessed from the landing and this room has a window overlooking the picturesque front garden. It too has a comfortable (memory foam mattress) bed with bedside tables, dressing table/drawers, wardrobe and comfortable chair. A separate (private) door within the bedroom leads into the 'Jack & Jill', en-suite shower room.
The shower room contains a washbasin, cubicle type shower and a discreet toilet and is accessed from both bedrooms through separate (private) doors.
Both cosy and comfortable with the combination of traditional Normandy charm and the convenience of 21st century living make this a fantastic place to relax, away from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

Surroundings
If you are seeking peace and quiet and/or a sense of isolation in a charming, modernised environment then 'SERENDIPITÉ' is for you.
Undoubtedly the proximity of 'SERENDIPITÉ' is one of its most appealing qualities. Located approximately 100 metres from its nearest neighbour and adjacent to a rural lane officially known as 'LE MARAIS DE ROUELLÉ' it is literally at the start of an ancient countryside trail, dating back to the 11th century, which stretches miles through protected marshlands. Here you will be absorbed into a world of fauna and flora, migratory birds, deer and agriculture.
The house itself stands alone on the lane and has a large, semi-circular, ornate front garden situated 3 metres away. The garden is surrounded by trees and fields. Here you can dine out on the large wooden picnic table under the shade of a large, mature Oak tree or simply enjoy the peace and quiet. You may see a red squirrel if you're lucky!
The super large, tree-bordered rear garden gives over to views of meadows and forests and gives a sense of space, calm and isolation. Perfect for relaxing, reading or maybe just walking in.
Enjoy the experience of hearing or seeing nothing that is man made, it is quite breathtaking!
Occasionally you may see the odd rambler passing the house making their way along the 'Marais'. A courteous wave or a simple ''Bonjour'' (they are normally French!) usually results in a reciprocal response or even a conversation if you're up for it!
Depending on the season you may also encounter an occasional tractor using the lane. The Farmers are friendly and, once again, usually respond to a wave.

Reviews
Wij komen heel graag terug.
Restaurants, food & wine
A detailed list of 'Things to Do and See' is available at the gite.
A few minutes drive (or a 20 minute bike ride) will take you to the lovely 'Fosse Artour' with it's links to King Arthur. (''Discover this marvelous site in which legend reports the love of King Arthur and his wife. They settle in two caves, on either side of the river. The king can join his wife only after sunset. But one day, unable to bear it any longer, he goes to see her before evening. A chasm then opens up in the torrent and the king disappears and his queen jumps into the river after him. They are now together, forever.'') Here you can walk around the beautiful lake or up to the top of the moderately difficult 'Calvary' with its panoramic view.
Rouelle is a charming little village situated within the commune of Domfront-en-Poirarie. Be aware though that there are no shops or facilities available here but, about 4 minutes drive away is the village of St.-Georges-de-Rouelley where you'll find a bar/restaurant, hairdressers and a couple of shops. In the other direction is the beautiful medieval town of Domfront. Here you will find a thriving community with supermarkets, chemists, restaurants and hairdressers but the real joy is the history. The castle (with dungeons!) is linked to William the Conqueror and the 100-year war and the square in the centre of town is simply beautiful, with cobbled streets and timber houses everywhere. The view from the castle is spectacular.
A short walk through the castle grounds takes you to a house built into the side of the cliff where you will find a plaque that commemorates the hiding of airmen, by the French resistance, during WW11.
30 minutes from Rouelle, you will find the fabulous ‘Belle Epoque’ spa town of Bagnoles de l’Orne and 1 hour 30 mins. in the other direction sees you at the Normandy coast and all of the incredible history and attractions to be found there including the WW11 landing beaches, war cemetries and other nostalgia.
'SERENDIPITY' is indeed ‘far from the madding crowd’ but provides an excellent base to visit the many attractions of the beautiful Normandy region.
