The house

  • Quiet, rural area with some traffic

Maison Ella at Normandy Gite Holidays is a former stone and earth barn converted during 2015 into a contemporary, well equipped and very spacious holiday home. The exposed oak beams have been retained and contrast with the new oak staircase, oak internal doors and fresh decor. Glass panels have replaced the original barn door which allow light to flood in to the large double height entrance hall. To one side of the hall is the lounge with a door leading out onto the patio and garden. Relax with a book from the bookshelves, watch English or French TV or simply chat to friends or family. There is central heating throughout but a woodburning stove is provided in the lounge for cosy evenings in. A well equipped kitchen/dining room is on the opposite side of the entrance hall. Fitted with an electric hob and oven, dishwasher, fridge freezer and microwave, there is plenty of room to prepare meals. The dining area seats 6 people comfortably and is a very sociable space for entertaining friends and family. A downstairs utility room with washing machine completes the ground floor.

Upstairs are 3 bedrooms. The very generous master bedroom is decorated in restful tones of cream, taupe and black. The room boasts a king sized bed and an ensuite shower room. There is another large shower room that is shared by the two 2 other bedrooms . Both rooms can be configured as twins or superkings for complete flexibility. Central heating has been fitted so the property can be rented throughout the year.

The barn sits in a plot of 2 hectares of land along with a further barn and the main house. If you require suggested itineraries, restaurant bookings making or general advice, help is always at hand from the main house. The gite is totally separate from the main house and the privacy of guests is respected at all times. There is plenty of parking in the main courtyard. To the rear of the gite, a private garden and patio have been created. An outdoor table and chairs together with a BBQ are provided for al-fresco dining.

Bedlinen and towels are provided as well as initial supplies of kitchen and household supplies. You'll also receive a mini welcome basket including cider from Normandy. There's a comprehensive welcome folder explaining how everything works in the gite. You'll also find a large selection of tourist leaflets and my Insider's Guide to Normandy giving you an overview of the local area. Gavray is a large village with a market on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. Equidistant from Coutances, Granville and Villedieu-les-Poêles, this is the ideal base from which you can explore the area. The nearest beach is just 15 km/9 miles away at Saint Martin de Bréhal and the ruins of Hambye Abbey are just a short drive away. There are plenty of bars and restaurants, markets and food producers in the area for you to taste Normandy delights such as Calvados (apple brandy), cider, caramel sauce, cheese and sweet biscuits. A visit to Normandy would not be complete without a trip to Mont St Michel, the UNESCO world heritage site. Mont St Michel is 45 minutes away. Bayeux and the D-Day landing beaches are also worthwhile day trips. With abbeys, churches, cathedrals, historical buildings, sandy beaches, cycling, watersports, gardens, quaint villages and gastronomic delights, Normandy has plenty to entertain you. I look forward to welcoming you to Normandy and sharing my local knowledge of the best places to visit.

Maison Ella is close to the large village of Gavray and equidistant from the larger towns of Granville, Coutances and Villedieu-les-Poêles. Granville is a port with an historic old town and the Christian Dior museum. Coutances has a wonderful cathedral and an impressive public garden. Villedieu is known for it's copper products which you can buy or visit one of the many museums. If you love history and heritage there are a number of abbeys, cathedrals, castles and churches to visit. The gite is located between Mont-Saint-Michel and Bayeux and the D-Day landing beaches. Mont-Saint Michel is an island commune with the most impressive abbey. Bayeux has a cathedral and is also home to the Bayeux tapestry. The five D-Day landing beach sites are all around an hour away and include memorials, cemeteries and museums. This makes it the ideal location to base yourself to explore Normandy.

Lovely, well equipped gite in a very convenient location. We visited several of the local beaches, all approx 15-20 minutes, enjoyed days out at Granville, Mont St Michel, Coutances and the D-day beaches (about an hour and a half away, but lovely for a full day trip). The gite has everything you would need (including equipment for children) and a good sized, enclosed garden. Chris was available if we needed anything (she lives in the house on the other side of the driveway), but left us in peace unless we needed assistance. Would definitely return.

So pleased you enjoyed your stay and that the children enjoyed playing in the garden in the sunshine.

In augustus was Maison Ella ons thuis in Normandië.

Thank you for such lovely comments. I’m pleased you enjoyed exploring the D-Day sites as well as relaxing on the nearby beaches. The beaches are all very different and we’re lucky with such a varied coastline not too far away. I hope all the family have happy memories of their time here in Normandy.

Thank you, Nathalie, for your very kind comments about how well equipped the gite is. I’m pleased you enjoyed exploring the neighborhood. I hope you have some great memories of Christmas in Normandy.

Restaurants, food & wine

Normandy is known for apple produce including cider and apple brandy, Camembert cheese, butter and shellfish. You can purchase cider and Calvados (apple brandy) at one of the many producers and taste before you buy. Granville has a good selection of seafood and shellfish to buy and take away or to eat in restaurants. Crêperies (pancake houses) are also very popular offering both savoury and sweet options. There's a wide variety of restaurants. They range from those offering quality good value meals to gourmet dining.

Visiting a market is a popular activity and there are several in the area. Gavray's market is on a Saturday morning with a smaller one on a Wednesday morning. It mainly sells food including fresh fruit and vegetables. There are also markets in Granville on a Saturday and in Villedieu on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Gavray has a supermarket, a small convenience shop, a butchers and three boulangeries. There are 2 restaurants, one bistro, 2 bars and also a take away pizza shop.

Activities

The nearest beach is 14km away although there is an entire coastline to choose from. Beautiful sandy beaches, dunes, pedestrian walkways and small seaside villages are dotted up and down the coast. It's a great area for nautical activities including sailing and wind sailing. There's also plenty of walking, hiking, cycle routes and some horse riding activities in the area. There's a golf course around 15km away and the area also had a few mini golf courses as well. The Champrèpus zoo is around a 20 minute drive and there are also a number of farms to visit. For those of you who like a bit of excitement, Normandy has a number of adventure and theme parks where you can go trampolining, laser shooting, paint balling and try a zip wire.

There is a large collection of tourist information leaflets in the gite which are updated each year.

  • Near hiking trails
  • Near riding
  • Near theme park
  • Water sports

Further remarks

A trip to Normandy is like stepping back in time. You can re-live the history of the past or simply enjoy the slower pace of life we enjoy here..
