Reviews
Anton Muller from Almere,
Twee heerlijke weken doorgebracht in Bray-Dunes.

Bert en Astrid Tijssen from Kampen,

Bas from Arnhem,

Restaurants, food & wine
The town has an unmistakably French character, in atmosphere, activities and the doings of the people. This part of France is known as French Flanders, hence the old Flemish names in surrounding villages, and some elderly people here still speak quite a bit of Flemish. This is reflected in the cuisine: lots of local beer, Flemish dishes (mussels, frites), as well as, of course, French cuisine. There are several restaurants and lots of local shops, including some excellent bakers/pastry chefs, butchers, a fishmonger, as well as tourist shops, a launderette, a couple of pharmacies, a smaller Carrefour supermarket in the village and a large Carrefour Market just outside.
Activities
Beach and sea, with many water sports opportunities such as (kite)surfing, sea canoeing, kite flying, and of course endless walks along the wide beach and through the adjacent dune reserves.
The French coastal town of Bray-Dunes hugs the Belgian border but is unquestionably Franco-Flemish in atmosphere. It originated in the 19th century and quickly became the weekend address for the wealthy inhabitants of northern cities such as Lille (Lille). They built beautiful villas and stately homes here. These old buildings still largely define the picturesque character of Bray-Dunes. Compared to other coastal towns in the Netherlands, Belgium and France, the new buildings are cosy and small-scale.
Traces of the Second World War
The beach from Bray-Dunes to Dunkirk, 10 kilometres away, was the battleground for one of the most incredible events during World War II. In late May and early June 1940, hundreds of thousands of British and French soldiers were trapped here by the German armies. Through a unique sea rescue operation called Operation Dynamo, they were evacuated in anything that could float to England. The impressive film 'Dunkirk' was made about this in 2017. In the dunes near the beach are the remains of several bunkers, also called 'Blokhaus', and diagonally in front of your flat you can see two more wrecks of British ships at low tide.
Free public transport, every day, 24/7!
Especially convenient if you want to explore the area without getting straight into your car: a free bus service goes every day, including in the evening. Ordinary public transport (so no tourist line), which allows you to travel quickly and easily to Dunkirk, as far as Gravelines (or Grevelingen, beyond Dunkirk) and Bourbourg, St Omer and other picturesque towns and villages in the region. The bus service is free for everyone. Get more information when you book.
Three golf courses nearby
No fewer than three different golf courses are within a short distance from the apartment: Koksijde Golf ter Hille (20 km) (two courses, 27 holes), near Dunkirk is Golf Bluegreen Dunkerque (20 km) (two courses, 27 holes), and about 30 km away is Westgolf (near Nieuwpoort, (1 course, 9 holes).
The indoor swimming pool
The town also has an excellent indoor municipal swimming pool, which you can visit for a few euros. You can go here daily for a few hours to swim laps.
The coastal tram along the Flemish coast to De Panne
Around the corner in De Panne starts Europe's longest tram line: the Flemish coastal tram. This line makes numerous daily trips down the entire coast during the summer months: from De Panne to Knokke and back again. You get on in De Panne, and get off again at all coastal and beach towns. Ideal trip for a day out. Day pass costs around five euros (child) or 8 euros for an adult.
Plopsaland: the Flemish Efteling
Just across the border in Belgium, a 15-minute drive away, the small town of Adinkerke is home to the Flemish version of the Efteling: Plopsaland. It may sound like something for small children, but make no mistake: it is a very popular entertainment park for the whole family, with a large tropical swimming paradise. Ideal for a day out when the weather is bad or you want something different from the beach.
Dunkirk: port city with a new lease of life
A good ten kilometres across the beach to the south lies Dunkirk, which has undergone a huge transformation in the last decade. After the departure of many heavy industries, many old factory buildings have been renovated and have new uses. Notable is the brand new museum of modern art, the FRAC, housed in one such old factory building. Hundreds of brand new expensive flats right by the sea give Dunkirk a new image, linking old industrial dynamics with modern art and new architecture.
Dunkirk also includes the old seaside resort of Malo-sur-Mer, which has made this whole stretch of northern French coast the focus of interest for walkers, cyclists, art lovers and beachgoers.

Further remarks
Please note: pets are unfortunately not allowed!
In summer, it is cosy and pleasant here, a real family seaside resort with lots of water sports. In spring and autumn, you can perfectly relax here, get a breath of fresh air and take endless walks along the beach and through the protected dune reserves. The town has typical French architecture: a long narrow promenade along the beach, beautiful old holiday homes and small-scale new buildings.
The main amenities are open all year round, such as bakery and butcher, supermarkets, the weekly market, some restaurants, cinema, indoor swimming pool, etc. The area has several excellent restaurants. You can play golf at three places within a radius of 20 km. The Plopsaland holiday park, with its huge tropical swimming paradise, is nearby. The apartment has WiFi, television and Internet via fibre optic cable, so with a large number of channels and with the possibility of watching films or television via your own streaming service (Netflix, HBO+).
