The house

  • Quiet, rural area with some traffic

My cottage is located in the foothills of the French Ardennes near the Belgian border, so close to the Netherlands but still you are completely in the silence of the French countryside.
A wonderful environment for people who seek peace and want to enjoy long walks or bike rides on quiet roads.
The house is located in the village of Iviers and has been carefully restored and decorated.
It can accommodate up to 5 people. The living room with wood stove has a nice atmosphere. The beautiful open kitchen with a five-burner gas stove, has plenty of kitchen utensils for good cooking.
The bathroom has a spacious shower, a sink and an infrared sauna for two people.
The downstairs bedroom has a large double bed with electrically adjustable slats.
Upstairs is a second bedroom with two single beds and a sitting area. A third single bed can be added.
In the front garden is a small terrace where you can see the village life passing by and behind the house is a large garden where you can sit privately. There are always both sun and shade spots. The garden is partially fenced so your dog cannot run away.
The house is always carefully cleaned before your arrival.
You are most welcome!

The region is visited by few tourists so you can enjoy the hilly landscape with fields full of flowering rapeseed in the spring, fields with grain in the summer and
meadows full of cows.
You will find small rivers, beautiful forests and farms with chickens and geese in the yard. In many ways time seems to have stood still here.
If at ten o'clock in the evening the street lights in the village go out, you can marvel at the clear starry sky.
It is a lovely area for long walks, there is a
lake where you can swim and there are opportunities for kayaking
or horseback riding.
By car you can follow the route along the fortified churches where the
population sought refuge during the many lootings in the
past. You can also make day trips to beautiful cities such as the
champagne city of Reims, Laon with its imposing cathedral or
Charleville-Mézières.
Saint Quentin city known for its art deco architecture and cozy terraces is well worth a visit.

Vriendelijke groet, Iwan-Erik & Ellen.

Heerlijk huisje. Mooie balans tussen oud en nieuw. Fijne indeling en plezierig ingericht. Alles was schoon en we voelden ons welkom.

Restaurants, food & wine

In the vicinity are several good restaurants. For those who like to walk (8km) from the house is a road through the woods and hamlet Hurtebise to Aubenton with restaurant La Table de Maya.In Aubenton is also a bar tabac bakery and grocery.
Around 10 am a baker passes by but should you miss it there is an excellent baker's store in Brunehamel three km from the house.
There are also good restaurants in Signy-le Petit La Hulotte aux Lion d`or, in Plomion Le Huteau, also in Vervins, nice town with a tourist office located in the archaeological museum, you will find several good restaurants such as La Tour du Roy and Le Relais Fleury. In the tourist office you can also buy local products such as cider and honey etc.
There is also a market in Vervins on Saturday morning and every last Friday of the month a night market with local products from four o'clock in the afternoon until nine o'clock in the evening

Activities

From the house you can walk endlessly on quiet roads and enjoy the peace and space, views over the fields, sleepy villages and beautiful forests. Also on the bike it is nice, although you must take into account the hilly nature of the area.
In the house there are several hiking trails for you.
Besides being quiet it is also really dark here, after 10 o'clock in the evening the streetlights in the village are turned off, you can enjoy an impressive starry sky.
By car you can follow a route along the fortified churches or make a trip to go horseback riding, swimming or kayaking.
Nice villages and towns, special churches and beautiful abbeys are also nearby and on weekends there are always a few villages that organize a flea market where you might be able to get a bargain.
In the guestbook you will find more tips for trips and a list of flea markets.
At a slightly greater distance you can taste champagne in Reims (65 km) or visit Charleville-Mézieres (50 km) with its many beautiful buildings. The medieval fortified city of Laon with its magnificent cathedral (55 km) is also worth a look. Paris is 210 km away, so that is also a possibility for a day trip.
