The house

  • Quiet, rural area with some agricultural activity

Villa Bièvres is a characteristic house, set on the edge of the village on a dead end street, leading towards.... the cemetery. There is very little traffic.
Enter this stately home via the steps and through the large red front door. Left of the hall there is the cozy large kitchen. The large oak table seats six people. The kitchen is equipped with all modern appliances: a modern 5-burner gas stove with hood, a refrigerator, an electric oven, a microwave and of course all the pots, pans and dishes you need to prepare a delicious meal.
Opposite the kitchen is the living room, the modern sofa and chairs form a pleasant contrast with the antique cupboards and lamps. The living room is also equipped with an attractive wood-burning stove. There is a screen with a Chromecast, to watch films or television programs from your own laptop or tablet. Via the Bluetooth speaker play your own music. Of course there is Wi-Fi throughout the house.
The thick walls ensure coolness in the summer and central heating ensure a pleasant temperature in the cooler seasons.
In the hallway there is the moden wc. Via the beautiful old staircase you reach the first floor, where there are two large bedrooms: One double, large Auping bed and the other twins, both with very good mattresses. On this floor there is also a simple but practical bathroom with a shower cubicle and a sink.
On the second floor is an attractive attic room with two single beds.
In the basement of the house are the washing machine and the tumble dryer.
Next to the house you will find a cozy terrace, an orchard with old apple, cherry, plum and pear trees. There is also a large walnut tree that is probably older than the house itself.

Northern France is still a relatively unknown region to drive through on your way to the south. Those who spend their holidays here, however, will soon discover that it is a beautiful and varied area.
Bièvres is a rural village with no more than 60 inhabitants. It is located in the French Ardennes-Champagne region, not far from the Belgian border.
The landscape has rolling hills, meadows and deciduous forests. Most of the residents of the region live from agriculture and animal husbandry.
On the edge of the village of Bièvres, you will find this striking holiday home. There is virtually no traffic so relaxation and peace and quiet guaranteed.

We had a lovely, quiet week at Villa Bievres
The hosts were very welcoming and were very informative. It serves as a great base for visiting Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg and The Ardennes.
The villa itself is very rustic and rural in location. Beautifully set in the heart of this village with locals passing daily going around their business. The facilities were good - only problem we had were elderly parents and the toilet being downstairs - a problem in the night-time but fine during the day. We found ourselves sat outside on the shaded terrace most days and evenings and took advantage of the barbeque provided. The farmyard sounds are delightful if you're only used to the towns & cities. There are lovely walks around the village and its only 20 minutes from a town with supermarkets etc.

Restaurants, food & wine

There are a number of good restaurants in the area.
In Margut, for example, Les Romarins and Aux Berges de La Marche. In Carignan you will find La Gourmandière and some pizzerias.
In Stenay you can visit Taverne Le Cygne and Auberge des tilleuls and more. Montmedy has Le Panoramique, and in Avioth you will find La Grange.
There are many cafes and restaurants in Florenville in Belgium.
Don't forget to go to the Abbey of Orval for the famous Orval beer, or the Orval cheese. There is also a restaurant and a large terrace.
In many places you can buy directly from the farm, watch for signs along the road.
Near Bièvres, behind the Ermitage Saint Walfroy is La Ferme de Champel, where products can be found including cheese, yoghurt and butter.
The first Sunday of the month there is an organic market in Avioth.

Activities

Villa Bievres is a great starting point for short and long walks, for hours of cycling, or for mountain bike tours through the forests on the surrounding hills.
In Florenville, which can be reached in about 20 minutes by car, you can canoe on the Semois. Fishing is possible nearby in the Chiers and those who love to play golf can go to Margut, which can be reached in about ten minutes. Those who do not like hills can cycle for hours on the virtually flat cycle path along the Maas.
But there is much more to do in the area: The citadel of Montmedy is certainly worth a visit, just like Sedan, location of Europe's largest medieval castle.
The small village of Avioth boasts a huge Gothic cathedral in the middle of the landscape and in Marville you can admire beautiful Renaissance houses. Just over the Belgian border, beer and cheese are still made in the beautiful old monastery of Orval. In Stenay, the beer museum is worth a visit.
Memories of the horrors of the First and Second World War can also be found in many places in the area, of course in Verdun, but also close to Bievres with its La Ferté bunkers from the Maginot line.
Larger cities such as Reims, Verdun, Metz and Luxembourg can be reached within an hour and a half by car.
In the spring and summer, no Sunday goes by without there being a flea market in one of the surrounding villages, where the best bargains are to be found.

Further remarks

In the morning the van of Boulangerie Agnes from Montmedy drives honking through Bièvres, with fresh bread.
In Margut, 5 km away, there is a very good bakery, La Petrie, and also a small supermarket and a caterer.
For larger shopping you can go about 15 km from Bièvres in Carignan, where are Carrefour and Aldi. In Stenay there is an Intermarché, an Aldi and Lidl. There is a big Super-U in Montmedy.
Most shops and supermarkets are also open on Sunday morning.
