Reviews
Stephanie from Zwevegem,
Anne from Parijs,
Alexandre Bovoillet from Parijs,
Restaurants, food & wine
The already mentioned 5 famous cheeses are not to be missed, many different goat cheeses are also produced. You will also find high-quality organic produce such as vegetables, meat, sausages, cheese, bread and honey at the markets. Due to climate change, the wine industry in Auvergne is booming. In addition to traditional wines, many good-quality natural wines are now available. For both, we are happy to give you addresses and phone numbers of winemakers where you can taste.
Activities
The immediate surroundings lend themselves perfectly to cycling tours, both on and off road. Also
hiking can be done right from the house. Whether you make long or short trips, you will be amazed
of the impressive landscape, the spectacular views and the overwhelming
silence.
You can swim in a swimming lake 15 minutes away. The large river Allier
you can swim. At the swimming lake a trail has been laid out between the
treetops and you can zip across the lake on a zip line. In the river Allier you can
you can canoe or kayak. There too you will be surprised by the peace and quiet and by the exciting
rapids.
With a fishing licence from the municipality, you can fish in the fish-rich rivers.
The loft is in a tiny hamlet at the end of a dead-end road. It is a
15 minutes uphill from the valley. Just before you start the climb, you pass through Auzon,
one of the most beautiful medieval fortified towns in the south of France with no tourist fuss. If you drive up from the loft for another 10 minutes, you'll come to Chassignolles, a very small village with a beautiful church and the famous and popular Auberge de Chassignolles where you can eat delicious food (the
organic vegetables come from their own kitchen garden) and fine natural wines. The
region is known for its many castles, Romanesque churches and the 5 cheeses: Cantal, Salers,
Fourme d'Ambert, Saint Nectaire and Bleu d'Auvergne. You can buy these cheeses directly from the
producers (farmers) who stand at the weekly markets (including in Brioude, Langeac, Issoire and Ambert). In Brioude (half an hour
drive) is an impressive basilica with, among other things, beautiful frescoes and a very original
floor. Some of the stained-glass windows have been replaced by new ones by the
artist Kim En-Joong.
In Brioude you will also find the museum of modern art Le Doyenné with an annually
changing exhibition (Miró, Picasso, Chagall, ...). Other towns worth recommending are Blesle, Lavaudieu, Le Puy en Velay, La Chaise Dieu, Lavoute Chilhac.
Of course, there are weekly flea and antique markets, street and music festivals and village festivals.
This part of Auvergne has long, hot summers that start early and turn into a
sunny autumn with beautiful colours. Compared to the Netherlands, it rains very
little. As the loft is at an altitude of 700 metres, most nights are pleasantly cool.
