Favourite (cycling) spots around Mont Ventoux.
From an interview with the Flemish journalist Ingrid Castelein.
What are your favourite spots around Mont Ventoux?
There are three places that you really should not miss here.
The Gorges de la Nesque. You cycle through a river gorge and birds of prey hover above you in the air. A rough and impressive landscape.
East of the Mont Ventoux are the beautiful Dentelles de Montmirail, again very different in shape, high and whimsical surrounded by vineyards.
And a few years ago, I discovered the Valley of the Toulourenc. The view is so wide that you feel very insignificant. You look out on the northern flank of the Mont Ventoux and that is a completely different landscape than the better known faces from Bédoin and its surroundings.
What are the most beautiful villages around the Ventoux for you?
Oh, impossible to answer that question! Bédoin, Sault, Brantes, Méthamis... there are so many beautiful villages! Each one with its own atmosphere, its own character. They are incomparable except for the fact that the view of the Ventoux links them. You can see the mountain in a circle of 50 km around it, that makes cycling around the Mont Ventoux so special.
Which bike tour offers the best views?
The tour around the entire Ventoux, a trip of 100 km where you can see the mountain from all sides. It is also a good tip for a trip by car or e-bike.
What are your favourite places in the Drôme?
Grignan with its beautiful castle remains a wonderful place to visit. High up and surrounded by strips of lavender and vineyards. I also like to go to the town of Nyons and its extensive Provençal market on Thursdays. And Montélimar is nice, with its nougat producers and beautiful avenues lined with plane trees.
What is the best place to see lavender fields?
The area between the Col de l'Homme Mort - in my case not quite the Col de la femme morte, haha, but I made it on the bike - and the villages of Aurel and Ferrassières.
What is a typical moment of happiness for you in the south of France?
In winter, strolling through the truffle market of Richerenches. And throughout the year: sitting on a terrace during market day in Bédoin. Glass of wine and preferably some bread with tapenade from local olives, a blissful moment.

Restaurants, food & wine

Around the Mont Ventoux, there are many nice villages.
One of the most beautifully situated is Montbrun-les-Bains, on the east side of the bare mountain, on a hilltop village. Besides the nice streets and Provencal houses, this is also the trump card of the village: the panoramic view of the whimsical landscape.
Montbrun-les-Bains benefits from a favourable location, it is protected from the mistral by the surrounding mountains and thanks to its fairly high altitude of six hundred metres, it suffers less from heat waves than villages further south. The village is surrounded by fields, forests and lavender fields and has been known as a thermal destination for centuries. The water, rich in sulphur, is, among other things, relieving for people suffering from rheumatism and osteoarthritis.
History:
The history of Montbrun-les-Bains is closely linked to that of other villages in this region. The sources were already known in Roman times. The hill where the present village is situated was probably already inhabited before that time. It grew into a fortified place, and in the Middle Ages an important castle was built. It was owned by one of the most influential families in the region. The village lost its importance when Charles Dupuy de Montbrun, leader of the Protestants, was executed in Grenoble. A few years before, his castle had been destroyed by order of the King of France. From then on, it was mainly popular for its thermal baths. After the First World War, people had other things on their minds than visiting spas, and the baths fell into disuse. It was not until the 1970s that the baths were revived. Nowadays, the thermal centre is once again bringing tourists to the village.
High point:
The literal highlight of the village is the walk to the castle at the top. You then pass all the nice places of Montbrun, successively the entrance gate, the church and the narrow ancient streets. At almost every point, you have beautiful views of the surroundings, with as cherry on the cake the panorama towards the Mont Ventoux in the west. Of the castle itself, quite a bit has remained standing, considering the fact that it has been in ruined condition for many centuries. However, the grounds are privately owned, so not otherwise accessible.
The church:
the beautiful church dates from the 12th century, has been greatly altered, contains a beautiful and impressive altarpiece from the 17th Bern in the middle a painting by Pierre Parrocel, a Madonna and Child.
The castle of Dupuy-Montbrun:
The medieval castle from the fourteenth century, demolished in 1560, was rebuilt by Charles Dupuy Montbrun in 1564 in pure Renaissance style. It is flanked by four round towers, three of which are still in good condition. The main door or gate of honour, carved in the rock, shows two semi-circular columns: on the left was carved an eagle, and on the right, a lion. Its imposing ruin overlooking the medieval village testifies to the power of the Lord at that time.
The Belfry:
The bell tower - or the Belfry - was one of four fortified gates built in the 14th century close to the town. High square tower, ended by a cantilevered platform on three sides, it is crowned by a campanile. Flanked by a magnificent fountain, it now gives access to the highest houses of the village, the church and the castle ruins.
The portal Ste-Marie:
St Mary's door - or the north portal - is one of the four fortified gates that protected Montbrun. The three other doors are that of the Clastre (under the archway of the church), that of the Belfry (Bell Tower Square), and the castle. These items sometimes with harrows reflect the defensive character of the old village.
The route of the fountains:
Available from the Tourist Office, the 16 fountains of the trail allow you to discover the village along a path from fountain to fountain.
Spa:
Possibility of medical cures (respiratory, rhumathology) and fitness.
Fitness room with spa pool, panoramic jacuzzi, steam room, sauna, massage, fitness and aerobics ...

Cycling
The Mont Ventoux: a challenge for every cyclist!
Every day, in every season, you come across them: the cycling adepts, they are always busy on or around Mont Ventoux. What drives them? If you ask this question you will not get a clear answer, but there is always the challenge, the nature, the weather, the atmosphere in combination with a sacred need to be behind.........
Or as it says, "On the trail of the pros".
In the lovely Provence, with its wonderfully fragrant lavender fields and pleasant terraces under plane trees, there is a horrible mountain.
If Provence is the Beauty, then Mont Ventoux is the Beast. This "Giant of Provence" or "Bald Mountain" or even the "Olympus of Provence" is especially heavy as lead, blisteringly hot, or on the contrary, chillingly cold, windy and above all exhausting........ This is not exactly a promotional text .............. and yet there are swarms of cyclists there every season. Apparently, they do find what they are looking for!
From the flat, there are plenty of opportunities to go cycling and to conquer the Mont Ventoux from all directions. But do not forget to make a trip through "La Valleé du Toulourenc" or along "Les Gorges de la Nesque".
And don't forget to have lunch in one of the many restaurants along the way. Not everyone is a Ventourist or Ventousiast, but still wants to make a trip, which is also possible if you do not have bikes with you, because there are excellent bikes for rent in the area!

An Eldorado for hikers?
Yes, absolutely, to the full.
If your imagination fails you, we have many possible routes at our disposal.
Just imagine: walking among the extensive lavender fields in our area and in the season sniffing the scent of a lavender-distribution stand in operation or watching how sometimes still with diligent handwork the lavender is harvested.
The broom is omnipresent, but of course, the lavender is central in this region, but in addition to the extensive lavender fields, nature is overwhelmingly beautiful and the villages on the road are an absolute counterbalance to our modern-day jostling.............
With the flat as a base, you have many possibilities all around and if you wish, we can bring you to the starting point of the day or pick you up - for a reasonable fee - where you ended up through your hunches............
In cases like this, a mobile phone can be a blessing.......
Recommended are definitely trips to "La Vallée de la Toulourenc" formed by the river of the same name, which is either swirling or babbling: "toul ou renc" or "all or nothing". The capriciousness of this river is reflected in its surroundings and can be experienced by taking a walk in its usually dry bed in summer.
Such a walk may end up in the upper town of Brantes with the kind of surroundings and Auberge you would wish for at such a time.

Further remarks

Where do we get the groceries?
The more than 400 inhabitants of Montbrun-les-Bains are - for such a small village - well provided.
A large supermarket (U Express) with an excellent butcher, a baker, post office, tourist office, bank (Credit Agricole), pharmacy, medical centre, spa ....
In short for such a small village excellent facilities.
