The little village of Glatigny is just a few minutes from the most beautiful long sandy (and often deserted!) beach.
It is nestled between the two towns of La Haye du Puit and Portbail, home to superb restaurants and weekly markets.
Barnville-Carteret is also nearby, and as a summer resort for many Parisians, it makes an ideal summer retreat.
Both Portbail and Barnville / Carteret offer excellent stables for horse riding and beach walks are not to be missed!
Please visit the village tennis courts, behind Marie's office in the village square. These are free for residents and you will find tennis rackets and balls in the barn.
From around June to early September, on most weekends, many of the neighbouring towns and villages hold festivals and celebrations with good music and food in the open air.
Most towns also have what's known as a brocante, which is essentially a furniture market, but it's well worth a visit as it's very rare for such quantities of antiques to be brought together under one roof at such low prices. By far the best is 'La Clé Des Temps' in Coutances.
There are many sites of interest from the Second World War, one of the most important being near Caen; unfortunately, the whole area is dripping with this bloody history. There is a book in the house showing the damage done to the nearby town of La Haye Du Puit, but this is not a unique story.

Restaurants, food & wine

Specific recommendations for local restaurants:

La Haye Du Puit:
"Pom'Cannelle" - this is a traditional but high quality restaurant offering fantastic but innovative food. Although by French standards it is a little more expensive than average, it is excellent value for money for delicious food and a steal compared to UK equivalents.

"Le Commerce" - sounds like our local "pub", you'll often find it packed with locals, and for good reason. The generous local food is very affordable and cooked over a fire in front of you. Menus are excellent value for money.

'L'équinoxe' - this is a local bar that often plays jazz in July/August. Although they don't really eat, the atmosphere is good and a great place for a drink or coffee.

Portbail:
'Aux 13 Arches' - this is a very good restaurant specialising in seafood (much of which is caught within a few miles!), It's a more upmarket place to eat, but again, as seems to be the case in France, is very cheap for exceptional food.
(Booking recommended)

'Au rendez-vous des pécheurs' - a local fish restaurant overlooking the estuary and a perfect visit for sunset. The food is very good quality and very reasonably priced.
Although we couldn't find 'Madame Croque' on the menu, it's a favourite here!

Other:
'Le Bac à Sable', Lindbergh's plague - a very close beach restaurant just down the road. Although not always open (ring ahead and make a reservation), it has a very cool atmosphere and often plays good live music. The location is great.

Hotel Restaurant des Isles (Tortuga), Barneville-Carteret - this is a great place to relax and have a coffee by the beach. It has a very high quality feel, but not too uncomfortable.
Breakfast here is also fantastic. Some of the freshest food I've eaten and great value for money. A really quality establishment

"Hôtel de la Marine", Barneville-Carteret - This is an upmarket hotel-restaurant ideal for a bit of indulgence!

There's a place called "La Maison du Biscuit" in the village of Sortosville-en-Beaumont and I'm really struggling to understand how to describe it, but I have to recommend it anyway! The best I can do is ask you to imagine a village organised by Willy Wonka and John Wayne, and you might come close! La Maison du Biscuit sells all kinds of biscuits, chocolate, sweets, honey, alcohol, whole foods, I could go on and on! It's also an excellent café for spending a few hours in a unique place! A recommended place to buy gifts that are very well presented, but reasonably priced. Let me know what you think!
In most restaurants you can get what's called a Café Gourmand, which is essentially a strong coffee and a selection of miniature desserts - a fantastic indulgence!

Activities

Mont St Michel is not too far away, and is a breathtaking place, highly recommend a visit.
The Bayeux Tapestry is nearby and makes for an interesting day out.
There are also regular boat trips to the beautiful Channel Islands of Jersey (which you can see from Glatigny beach) Guernsey, Sark and Alderney and if you are in the area for a decent period of time I would recommend a day trip.
The town of "Villedieu-les-Poêles" is about 1 hour away (and not too far from Mont St Michel) and is an amazing place to visit to see metal work, mainly bell forging, which is the town's main export from the Middle East. Age.
There are plenty of leaflets and books in the house with more recommendations on what to do in the area.
